Do the legs and shelves extend past the total length of the top?

Love the desk. Beautiful. I am making a sofa table that has two shelves that will sit in dados cut into the legs, similar to your design. I will be attaching the solid (not a panel) 12″ walnut table top with z-clips to allow for movement. My question is do I have to allow for movement of the shelves, which would be inhibited by gluing? They are 8″ x 55″ maple (solid piece). Thanks so much for all of the great content!

  Well, movement will occur. So you either allow for it or you don’t. If you don’t, the legs will move in and out with the panel. In some cases, that’s fine. My desk is one of those examples. The limited amount of movement will likely push and pull the legs but the wood is flexible enough to take it. In the ideal world, the shelves would be allowed to float without applying any pressure to the legs. But as a calculated risk, I’ve broken a wood movement rule here in favor of simplicity.

    Thanks so much! That is what I thought and am pushing forward with a little glue in the dados, with the understanding that I’m taking a little risk. My dados are not perfect, so no glue might provide too much “floating.” Lol. Wood movement has been one of the biggest tough learnings as I branch out on my builds.
