DIY Drill Holder & Charging Station: Ultimate Woodworking Organization!

Back in 2010 I built a very basic Drill Charging Station to show off a new joinery gadget. It featured two shelves and that’s about it. Only eight short years later, I finally decided to build a proper Drill Holder & Charging Station.

A Drill Holder & Charging Station is one of those shop projects that seems simple, until poor design starts slowing you down. The original version of this station worked fine at first, but as the number of drills and chargers grew, it became clear that chargers needed to be secured and drills needed more clearance, especially when bits were left installed. This redesign solves both problems while keeping the build fast and approachable.

The updated Drill Charging Station uses angled shelves to maximize space and usability. The bottom shelf slopes back and extends to a full ten inches of depth, giving drills plenty of room even with long bits chucked. The top shelves are shallower and angled for a cleaner profile, while the side-mounted chargers are mechanically restrained so they can’t lift when batteries are removed. That single design change turns battery removal into a one-handed operation instead of a constant frustration.

How To Make It

Construction stays simple and efficient throughout the build. I use 3/4-inch Baltic birch plywood for its stability, strength, and thick face veneer. Dados in the side panels lock the shelves in place and add mechanical strength without relying on complex joinery. I size and space the drill slots to match the tools, then add chamfers and gentle roundovers so the drills sit securely and don’t wear against sharp edges.

I create the angled profile by tapering the side panels between shelf locations, keeping the station compact while preserving plenty of clearance where it matters most. After glue-up, rear cleats make wall mounting solid and straightforward. A final round of sanding breaks all the sharp plywood edges, helping prevent splintering and ensuring the station holds up to daily use in the shop.

Finishing

Finished with a simple water-based poly, this Drill Charging Station is a quick build with long-term payoff. It keeps tools organized, chargers secure, cords manageable, and the entire system easy to expand or customize as your tool collection grows. It’s the kind of shop project that takes only a few hours to build but improves your workflow every single day.
