🤯 Double Your Drawer Space?! Genius Woodworking Hack!

Video - January 12, 2019

Most shop drawers waste a surprising amount of space. Tools and supplies sit on the bottom, while valuable vertical space above them goes unused. This project shows how to double your drawer storage by adding a simple sliding tray system inside an existing drawer, turning one drawer into two functional layers of organization.

The idea comes straight from kitchen cabinetry: a shallow top tray that slides back to reveal a second storage area underneath. Applied to a shop drawer, it keeps related items together while making everything easier to see and access. In this example, writing tools live in the top tray, while templates and layout aids stay organized below, no digging required.

To make room for the sliding tray, the drawer back is partially cut down, removing only the upper section while keeping the drawer structurally sound. Narrow risers made from 1/4-inch plywood are glued to the drawer sides to support the upper tray and allow it to slide freely. The trays themselves are simple, shop-made boxes built from scrap hardwood and plywood, sized slightly undersized to prevent binding.

A small finger relief in the top tray makes it easy to slide back, while cleats installed inside the drawer prevent the tray from tipping when extended. Inside the trays, custom grid dividers made from thin plywood keep small items neatly separated. The grid layout can be customized for anything you want to store, from layout tools to hardware or kitchen utensils.

This is a fast, low-cost project that uses scrap materials and basic tools, yet it dramatically improves drawer efficiency. Whether you apply it in the shop or the kitchen, this approach lets you double your drawer storage without rebuilding cabinets or adding more drawers, just smarter use of the space you already have.
