268 – Scrapwood Jewelry Boxes

Scrapwood. It’s something woodworkers accumulate as a natural part of the woodworking process. Even though the pieces are hard to incorporate into larger projects, there’s still a LOT of value in them and it’s a good idea to come up with small projects that can make good use of the stuff. That’s exactly what I had in mind when I created these small elegant jewelry boxes. And while the project appears simple, you’ll see that it does require attention to detail and precision. Even small projects deserve your best effort! So let’s dig in!

Okay, where did you get the 5mm hinges?

the smallest I was able to find were 10mm.

Can you tell me what type of epoxy you used to mount the hinges.
I built 2 of these in the last few days and they area a great little project and fun to make.

Just drilled for the barrel hinges .28 to 30 as instructed. But still too big of a gap. Is one side, either top or bottom supposed to be deeper??

  Not to my knowledge. Just make the holes incrementally deeper until the pieces come together.

This was a fun project. Took forever to get the barrel hinges. Next time flock instead of adhesive felt.

I happen to look up David Knipfer, on his site he shows making like 10 of these at a time but he hogs out the material from the bottom with a band Saw. he cuts a 1/4″ kerf into the block then goes to the BS slides the blade into the kerf and cuts away. Seems like a harder way to do it then using a dado stack. Thanks for the video

Hi Marc,
Just noticed a discrepancy between the video and plans. Video says 1/4 inch for the curved top. Plans show 1/8 inch.

    Oh wow I wouldn’t have guessed that. I made a tray for my wallet, keys etc. out of purpleheart. The project ended up being more on the red/purple side.
    
    I’m a noob so I’m still learning. It’s amazing how wood takes on so many variations.

Your scrapwood jewelry boxes have been an inspiration for me. I picked up a used scrollsaw from a friend and had to come up with some projects to use it on. Problem solved: Inlaid letters on the jewelry box lids!
