Loving your show, was curious what the name of the tool you used to mark the tenons but also I am assuming cut the wood just a little to give it a nice clean cut after you cut on the table saw. it was maroon and gold I think, and last I saw on the video you left it sitting on the table saw outfeed table. Thanks because I think that tool would definitely come in handy, especially with softer woods. Thanks bud, keep up the good work.

I saw you switched to a marine varnish for the rustic outdoor table. I was thinking about building that. Can you comment on what kind of mainteinence you expect for that vs. the teak oil finish?

  I don’t know. We’ll find out. :) I’m expecting to have to sand lightly and give another coat in 2 years. If it takes more than that, I expect the finish to flake and fail due to lack of maintenance. :)

Is there something the multi router can do that can’t be done with both dominos?

  Yes, lots of things. For one, it can make tenons. It’s also capable of making lots of other joinery and has the option of using various pre-made templates.

    But aren’t the dominos themselves the tenons? I guess what I’m asking is are there joints the multi router can do that the domino can’t? As you mentioned, the domino can also do double mortises/tenons. As well as angled mortises. I’m curious because I see a used one on sale but already have both dominos and since you also have both dominos I’m curious as to your rationale. Or maybe im just hoping you can talk me into getting a new tool.

      Yes, Dominos are tenons. But they are tenons of fixed width and thickness. The Domino can certainly do 90% of the standard mortise and tenon operations most of us will ever need to do. But there are cases where the joints need to be milled in such a way that the Domino would make it impossible or limiting. Will you confront those situations? Maybe not. Depends on how far you want to go with your woodworking and what you want to build. But I don’t want to mislead you into thinking the Domino can do absolutely everything.
      
      As an example, I recently built a Blacker House Chair with William Ng. There were numerous operations we used the multi-router for where the Domino wouldn’t have even been an option.

      Thanks for explanation Mark. I haven’t done any complex joinery yet (only 90 and 45 degree mortise/tenon) so I can’t envision what type those joints would be. Can you give some examples?

Ignore the net sayers. The double mortice and tenon has its place in wood working, as do scarf joints, through mortices, a japanese miter joint, which incidentally are all done with hand tools not machines. The true advantage of the double mortice and tenon is that it provides greater broad grain to broad grain gluing surface, thereby adding to the strength of the joint, that said however, I would reserve the use of this type joint to material that is at the very least 1-1/2 inches thick much less than that and you are truly in my non-engineering mind weakening the strength of the core material.
By the way I continue to really like your show, I had planned on joining the guild this year, however, we are in the process of preparing to sell the house and move on, so I will have to wait until we have landed in our new home, which should be around this time next year. Hoping for the best for you and your lovely wife in 2015.
