Mark,

I think you might have missed what the poster with the question regarding different joints for making up a leg was asking. There is a technique (may have originated with Stickley???) for making up legs using four pieces of (QS white oak) in which all four faces of the leg are face grain. This usually leaves a small square hollow in the middle of the leg. Locking miters or splined miters are the two joints that make sense to me. There is another technique that involves gluing up legs in the way you described (face to face), putting a 1/4 veneer on the edges to cover the joints, and chammfering the edges to a depth that results in the joint between the 4/4 face grain and veneer landing right on the edge of the chamfer (and thus being concealed). Both of these techniques were aimed at making legs that presented the same type of grain on all four faces.

Sorry for calling you “Mark”. I heard you mention on one of your recent Live events that this is a pet peeve. As someone who has been corrected by strangers upon introduction that my name is actually “Chad” for most of my life, you’d think I would pay more attention to these sorts of details.

Help please with finishing a jewelry box lid. I have a lip or frame that is 1/4″ taller than the actual lid with a scrolled O in the middle o f the lid. I would like to fill the lid with a poly coat and fill it to meet the frame. Can this b e done? And is it just a matter of taking the time over days to fill it? I’m very new at this so please help
