The Best Online Woodworking School? We Think So.

Article - March 30, 2023

If you have spent any time searching for woodworking classes online, you know the drill. Endless listicles, a lot of clickbait, and videos that skip the one step you actually needed to see.

The Wood Whisperer Guild is our answer to that. Since 2009, we have been building woodworking courses with some of the best furniture makers and craftspeople working today, and we film them the way we wish someone had filmed them for us: start to finish, mistakes included, nothing hand-waved.

Quick note before we go further, since people ask us often: we are not affiliated with the Woodworkers Guild of America. Different group and approach. We do our own thing.

You learn from people who actually build for a living

A Guild course is not a YouTube tutorial with a longer runtime. Every instructor we bring in has spent years, usually decades, making furniture and teaching it.

Marc Spagnuolo, author of Hybrid Woodworking and Essential Joinery, has been teaching woodworking online since 2005. Guild instructors have also included Philip Morley, Darrell Peart, Chris Schwarz, Megan Fitzpatrick, Jory Brigham, Ashley Harwood, Caleb James, and Frank Strazza, among others.

You watch on your own schedule, rewatch the tricky cuts as many times as you want, and never lose access to a course you bought.

Real projects, filmed step by step

Guild courses are built around finished pieces, not disconnected technique demos. You start with rough lumber and end with something you can put in your house.

There are courses for people who just bought their first tools and courses for people chasing tighter joinery, and every one comes with PDF plans so you are not pausing the video with a tape measure in your hand. The advanced builds get broken into the same small, followable steps as the beginner ones.

Buy one course, keep it for good

Here is how joining the Guild works. You buy the course you want, starting at $49, and you own it for life along with a lifetime Guild membership. No subscription, no expiring access, no upsell to a bundle.

Not ready to commit to a course yet? Guild Stream is the cheaper way in. For $19 a month, or $199 a year if you want two months free, you can stream two of Marc’s Guild courses each month and download the plans that go with them. The lineup rotates monthly, so there is always something new, and you can rewatch a course as many times as you like while it is up. Stream courses do not get added to your permanent library, but subscribers do get 10% off any course they decide to buy for good.

It is a family business, and the instructors get paid like partners

The Guild is run by our family. When you buy a course, that money keeps a small business going, and it keeps paying the person who taught it.

Most platforms pay an instructor a flat fee and keep the rest forever. We share revenue with our instructors indefinitely. Every purchase of their course still pays them, years after filming wrapped. It is a small thing on paper and a big thing in practice, and it is the reason makers of that caliber keep saying yes.

Come build something

More than 25,000 people have joined since 2009, which still surprises us. If you want to build better projects and learn from people who have made every mistake already, pick a course and get started.
