In the final part of our series, Aaron puts the finishing touches on the trunk lid. If this is your first experience with SketchUp, I highly recommend checking out the tutorials located at SketchUpForWoodworkers.com.

You can download SketchUp here and if you are looking for the original file used to make this Steamer Trunk tutorial, you can download that here. Also, check out the SketchUp Room in the Wood Talk Online Forum. There is a growing list of models there available for download.

Thank you to both Aaron and Marc for these Sketchup tutorials. I had seen the SketchUp name before but never used it until the start of these tutorials. I have a couple projects I want to eventually build and this will allow me to put my ideas on paper better than a simple hand drawing. I’ve already used it to do some very basic shelf building. Thanks!

Echo the thanks!!! very nice of you to share your skills like this!!

I like this idea of using software to help design. I know most people need to see it on paper first.

You’ve got me hooked on sketchup. It is amazing that with only a few simple features you can do a lot. I was able to put together a plan for a desk on my first time playing with it. Thanks for your great work.

  5. Aaron says:

Thanks for all the great comments! It was a little nerve wracking to put these videos together knowing I had to stay consistent with with Marc’s usual quality levels. Glad to know that folks are finding SketchUp as useful in the shop as I do!

Just saw these three sketchup tutorials – very nicely done! I’ve used it a few times but certainly don’t find it intuitive and struggle each time I use (play with) it.

As you suggested, Marc, I have looked at the tutorials on the Sketchup for Woodworking site but for some reason I end up with a long time delay between the audio and video. It is not much help when you’re watching a step on the screen that has been orally described five or six steps ago.

Thank you both so much for these tutorials on Sketchup. I had been viewing Marc’s project videos and stumbled upon it. I can’t believe I was not aware of Sketchup until now. I’ve downloaded it and will begin playing with it. Keep up the great videos Marc, and I’ll be checking out your site too Aaron!

Aaron (and Marc) thanks for these videos. I’ve been using sketchup for a while now and thought you used the pro version because of the solids that were produced. These videos show me that the free version is just as capable and I’ve learnt a lot from your demonstrations. I will now be using components more as I had got used to using groups. Also I wasn’t aware of the triple click thing to select objects you’ve just drawn.
I just shows what an awesome program sketchup is.
