Cookbook Holder – Viewer Project

This project is submitted by Mike. Let’s see what he has to say:

cookbook-holder-003-large Thanks for the inspiration on the magazine rack. It struck me that this would be a great design for a cookbook holder, which my wife had mentioned to me would make a good Christmas gift. So I made a few adjustments to the design on SketchUp and went to work with the new (tentative) dimensions. The biggest change I made was the angle of the channels for sliding the two pieces together. Instead of 45 degree cuts I made them 90 degrees. Everything else was pretty much your design.

I found the length of the the legs to the shorter piece to be about perfect. It allows for the correct reading angle of the book that will be resting on it and for support of the entire piece. (Shorter legs and the thing wants to tip over backwards, longer legs and it might tip forward) I made it out of cherry and put a lacquer finish on it.

All in all, it was a fun simple project that will surely put a smile of my wife’s face. Thanks for all that you do.

THAT would go over VERY well with certain people of the wifely persuasion… and looks quite doable for my still limited skill set…

Any chance of posting Mike’s revised Sketchup file, so I get the proportions right?

Kudos to Mike for taking it somewhere new, and thanks to Marc for the original.

I will now show my thanks by following a sponsored link from this page… kinda like the look of that small scraping plane, for example…

I have an email out to Mike letting him know his project was posted. With any luck he’ll read the thread and maybe be so kind as to send over the Sketchup file. If he does, I would be happy to post it for you.

And thanks for clicking the link. Much appreciated!

Is there a place I could find the plans for the cookbook holder viewer project. It was the modification to your magazine rack. I think I’m going to make these for Christmas presents. thanks and have a nice weekend

Hey Mike, neat idea. My wife has wanted a cookbook holder and I have been racking my brain to come up with a design. Great adaptation of Marc’s mag rack. And so simple. I will make one soon.

Gotta try my luck at resawing with my new Grizzly G0555 bandsaw.

    And speaking of resawing:
Marc, for cutting 3/4″ down to 3/8″, do you prefer the “pivot point” or full fence method? (keeping in mind that I don’t have the Mondo size bs that you do :-)

    Jim

    • thewoodwhisperer says:

Personally I always prefer the full fence method. I like my resawing to be as “brainless” as possible, lol. The pivot system is nice but you have to steer the whole way. The full fence method requires a little more work up front, but pays off in the long run.

      • Jim Jones says:

Thanks. That was my thinking. Takes a lot of concentration to watch the line constantly for a board longer than 6″. lol

When I’m not woodworking, I like to cook. There are commercial cookbook holders on the market. None of them hold a candle to Mike’s! I see at least one of those cookbook holders in my future…

  4. Chester says:

Looks like a Grizz catalog …

  5. Dave O says:

Looks like an old Grizz catalog. The golf cart and bucket truck are on different pages in the current one. Time for a new catalog, Mike! You shouldn’t cook up a new project with an old cookbook.

  6. Kevin says:

This is a fantastic design! Has anyone had luck locating the plans?

  7. Phil McCrackin says:

aye breh this is nice my girl really liked it cuz she cook lots doe

  8. Paul Tucci says:

Great design. My daughter wants “dad” to make her one. Does
    anybody have the plan?
