Turtle Inlay Jewelry Box

This is a jewelry box for my daughter, Melissa (nickname: Turtle), hence the turtle inlay in the top. She just turned 6 and is starting to accumulate some jewelry. Simple buscuit joinery with my first attempt at router based inlay after watching Marc’s video. Designed the turtle inlay to include the “M” for Melissa.

Would have liked to use Wenge instead of Walnut for the legs and handle but my hardwood supplier was out. I think she will be happy with it and hopefully will get years of use.

She’ll love it. She’ll actually keep that for life and probably pass down to her daughter, if she has one.
I love the feet and how the handle inlays. Very cool.

Personally I think wenge might have been too sharp a contrast with the cherry in its present coloration. I think the choices of wood are excellent, and the choice of grain patterns is excellent on the sides we can see.

I think the overall project looks great, including the inlay. Is the interior compartmentalized or anything like that?

  Thanks for the comments. I am happy with the way it turned out but was looking for a higher contrast. I tried staining the walnut with minimal results so I decided to leave it alone. Inside is not compartmentalized but has a purple material bottom. I figure I would build some trays as my daughter gets more jewelry that will accomodate her collection.

That is a very nice box. She will love it and that you made it for her. I really like the design. It is appropriate for her now but something that she can continue to use as she grows up. Well done!

  No hinges used, I used a 3/16″ brass rod to act as the hinge. Inside is open for now, I covered the bottom with a purple (my daughter’s favorite color) material. I planned on builiding some trays later to accomodate her growing jewelry collection.

Looks really great. I get a kick out of when people sound all apologetic about how bad something turned out and it really looks awesome! I understand though because I am the same way. Except mine don’t all look as awesome as yours! Did you design this thing yourself or get it from somebody else? It’s very simple, but there is an understated elegance to it, the choice of woods just adds to it, the handle, the simplicity of the hinge, the way you added the turtle with the letter m, it’s there, but just subtle enough that it’s almost like a private communication with your daughter. I’m sure she loves it now and will only learn to love it more for all the little things as she gets older. Great job!
