Project Description:
I had an old workbench that had a steel top so after watching Marc’s torsion box assembly table video, I decided to give building one a crack myself.

The box is primarily made from 1″ MDF and a hardboard layer on the top skin. I also put quite large dog holes to accommodate clamps so it would serve as a multi-function table also. I finished the edges with 1/2″ plywood which made it look great.

Looks good! How well do those dog holes work? I’d be worried about using them for clamping since the top is so thin and MDF crumbles easily.

Hi Ben,
The clamping works really well, i had to modify some Bessey LM clamps to fit the holes, but the mdf holds really well, its 1” so its fairly Heavy duty. i was going to buy the festool track clamps for the MFT but they are so expensive i went for some cheap besseys.

Nice!!! I’m not sure I have quite the patience or time to build a great workbench, but seeing that you put the dog holes in the torsion box…this would be a good alternative. How long did it take you to build this one? It seems like a size that would fit into my shop pretty good too!!! :) Good work!!!

Hi Lori,
i am only 16 so i still go to school, i only get between 4 and 8 pm because of noise restrictions, so it took me 1 afternoon on sketchup and around 2 to build it.

Nice job, Taylor. Are your casters double-locking? I mean, does the lock lock the swivel as well as the wheels? Also, what are the dimensions?
