Doug’s Tack Trunk

Just thought I would send in some pictures of my latest project. I built it for my girlfriend to use as a tack trunk to keep at the barn where she boards her horse. It is made from walnut with a aromatic cedar bottom for both the trunk and sliding tray. I went with a no fuss finish using Watco Danish oil. This was my first attempt at hand cut dovetails and I think they came out pretty well.

Considering that it will be stored in a barn and given hard use, I would think about a slightly more robust finish than plain Danish oil. The oil won’t really protect the wood against moisture and abrasion, and the dull finish will be a dirt magnet. At the very least, I would think about giving it a couple of additional coats of Watco Exterior oil. It will be much more waterproof, will build up a bit of a sheen, and will help bring out the color of the wood. Just one opinion.

No one can spend money like a woman with horses.

I owned a couple show horses with a friend of mine that is a trainer. Apparently I owned the feeding end and the crapping end, she owned the middle.

Ahh love…makes a man do hand cut dovetails (and other thing we normally don’t). Nice job on the tack trunk and the dovetails. I agree with Mr. Drabek, a tougher exterior finish may help the trunk last longer and protect that hard, nice work you did.

I like the simple rustic look, the dove tails look like they came out pretty good for a first attempt.

Good looking chest. I also like the “no fuss finish” I think Danish oil is one on my favorites, but it will require regular maintenance.

Nice looking dovetails and design. I am just learning about horses and how much tackle goes with them, my 6yr old girl has fallen in love with them so now we go to friends places that have them to keep her horse addiction under control!! I am sure your other half loves it.

Very nice! I agree about the finish – I would suggest Waterlox myself -easy- no fuss and a couple coats will hold up very well for a long time.
