Scott’s Kitchen Table

My wife really wanted a new table. We purchased our old one just after we were married and it was used then. We shopped all over and didn’t really find anything that fit us or that was in our price range. So I took some ideas from several other tables and got on Sketch-up and in my basic way got to work designing what I thought might look good. And this is what I came up with.

For a “basic way” that’s a darn nice table.
Did you come up with the idea for the router jig yourself?

Very nice table. I really like how you turned the legs instead of going out and buying a set.

Well done sir. This is the main reason why I have just gotten started in woodworking. When you go to a store to shop for things, you do not get what you pay for, and if you do you get crap! Making whatever your in the market for is cheaper (most times ;)) and the satisfaction is priceless when the build is complete. I am going to show this to my friend who is entertaining building a new kitchen table as well. I’m sure he will aprove of the project over all.

How did you feel turning those big legs? The table looks great! What is the final dimension of the top and did you put the Arm-R-Seal on the legs too?

Really really nice. Like Mike H, I like the trim detail. The legs are very impressive too. And of course the walnut top!!

Looks wonderful. Great job. The black legs really let the top stand out. Might have been fun to have a “before” shot to give the sense of upgrade. I love it when the IKEA, used no less, is replaced by a workshop creation.

Thats one hell of a panel glue up!! Wonder what kind of joinery was used for both the legs to apron and top to apron. The detail on the apron and legs is an excellent addition. Great job.

Love the table, as I hope Mrs Scott does too.

The same proportions would work for a coffee table aswell.

Very nice table, Scott. I wonder if you could expand on combining the router and lathe? Can you describe the process?

Just studied those legs again. I would not have been able to cover the wood grain and pattern. Too nice just the way they are.

The table looks fantastic, Scott! Taking the time to turn the legs rather than make do with what you can find pre-made helps to make the table uniquely yours. I especially like the molding you used to go around the legs and apron. It gives the table a more finished touch. When do we get to see pics of the matching chairs?

Amazing table Scott,
I really like the combination of finishes, the painted legs really make the top pop. The trim work looks really good around the base adds a lot of nice detail, and really nice job on the legs making your own definitely makes it your own.

I think that I see black chairs in the background. Did you refinish these? They look newly painted and seem to match the legs of the table.

The table looks great Scott and way better then you can get in most furniture stores. When I saw the picture of the finished table when the post first came up in my RSS feeder I figured you had just bought pre-turned legs from a source like Rockler, but when I saw you had done them yourself I was duly impressed. The finish and complete table came out great and I am betting it will be in your family for some time – probably generations.

Thanks everyone, I can’t tell you what it means to here the positive comments from others that know what it takes to create these pieces.
I’ll try to answer some of the questions you have had.
It is 5×5 1 1/4″ thick Walnut on the top.
I can’t really remember how long it took but what I can say is that it was several months, with having to go to the day job all the time.
And I needed to save a bit more money for the walnut.
I was going to make chairs as well but My wife found some at a store that looked pretty close to a match and they had a sale buy one get one free so she got 8.
As far as the Lathe and the router go, I , sorry Marc. Saw on the New Yankee Workshop a few years ago that Norm had done something similar for one of his projects. I thought that this would be a good chance to try it out.
All I did was make a box that had a groove, I guess that’s what you’d call it in the middle of one side, then with a collar in the router just cut off the corner of the legs so they would have space of the corner braces.
I hope that makes some sense.
I admit I was a bit nervous about spinning those big legs in front of me but I just went slow both with the lathe and with the tools, I’m not a great turner and would never presume to say otherwise. I have just basic knowledge of the skills needed to do it and hope to gain more as I practice, I guess that’s kinda the point to making saw dust is to get better with more and more pieces.
Anyway thanks again to Marc for putting this on the site and to all who have commented, it really means a lot!

Scott

Nice work man. I too have had good results with a can of spray paint, though an HVLP sprayer would be awesome. I love the legs. Makes me want to go out and buy a lathe. Thanks for posting.
