Edward’s Sash Clamped Workbench

This workbench was designed to have a good weight and surface area while still allowing the user to continually transport it in a small car. The workbench remains portable as it is not glued but held together by four sash bar clamps.

Made from a mix of budget redwood and steamed beech, this bench hopes to fuse an economical build spec, good transportability and a recognisable shape. Finished in Osmo transparent wax oil, the user will soon find out if this is a useful design or a waste of clamps!

Looks like an interesting portable concept, although I suspect that the sash clamps would be better off replaced by all thread and a few wing nuts to allow recessed hardware. I’d guess that the clamp heads/tails will be in the way often or easily run into with delicate parts..

Interesting concept but how long to assemble? Also, no passenger in the front seat I guess.
I would be tempted to get a tiny hinged trailer and tow a complete unit or an MFT-3 in the boot.
All the same, an impressive bench and smarts to design and build.

Project looks great and I liked the suggestion of replacing the clamps with all thread. I would also suggest that a ton of weight/bulk could be reduced by eliminating the bottom level. If it’s meant to be portable for a job why make room for storage? For a shop I could understand but you could still keep your tools under it on the floor and eliminate 1/3 of the wood. What about an open slat option if you are dead set on the bottom shelf. (http://www.gardenista.com/file.....-table.jpg)

Agree with Jeremy about the clamps. Perhaps another alternative would be to use some sort of tenon/tapered wedge arrangement to draw everything tight like we do for the stretcher between the legs of some table designs. And possibly put those only on the “back” of the bench instead.

Even with the clamps I’d probably reverse them to move the handles to the rear.
