Black Walnut Hall Table

A simple hall table in walnut. The top is bookmatched, and I carried the grain across the drawer fronts which also have hand-cut, half-blind dovetails.

I like that you incorporated the sapwood so well. I’m a huge fan of sapwood in Walnut pieces! I think it really does a perfect job of highlighting the beauty in the heartwood..

Reminds me … Years ago I told a friend that I was gonna build that same table out of PINE. He then tells me that if I really pay attention to the finish I can make it look just like plywood. Funny. Yours looks great. Really nice.

Hey Jerome, the table looks great! How did you make/attach the drawer pulls. I’m finishing up an end table and I’m torn between hardware. It’s also nice to see other eastern Pennsylvanian’s in TWW network!

Very nice. Love the bookmatch (of course). I have some walnut I bought some years ago that has great bookmatch potential. A hall project like this would be perfect. I think the boards are almost 6″ wide. So the top would be a little less than 12″. what are the dimensions of your table? (Looks wider than 12, maybe 14-16″?) Nice dovetails by the way. On my growing wish list of skills to learn.

Absolutely beautiful. I love the finishing job. Did you use the shellac as a pore filler or just as a seal coat? I am going to be finishing a project in the near future with an open grained wood and was admiring your finish. The table looks great.

Love it. There is no way to mistake it for something store bought, thanks to the top. I bet everyone you show it to will want to walk up and touch the surface.

    I third that. Beautiful work, it shows that you have a natural talent for woodworking that is beyond your actual years of experience. The table is tasteful and well executed. Kudos to you Jerome.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. To answer Brian’s question on the pulls; I turned some cutoffs round on the lathe, penciled the ends then sanded a flat spot on one side. There attached with very small dowels.

  I agree. I prefer my standard jazz bass but sometimes u gotta go with what the client or tune wants. I draw the line at 5-strings.
