Finish Used: Mixture of natural oil including a bit of wax.

Project Description:
This table was basically my second project; focus was very simple design – straight. I wanted to avoid metal, therefore I used mortise & tenon joinery including wood dowels. Sanding was done in 80-150-180 grit steps, then one oil coating and followed by 240 grit with another coat. Details can be found on my blog page, at least the images since the text is in German ;-)

Very nice work, Bernhard. I like the clean lines and the simplicity of the design. I don’t mean it looks simple, just that it isn’t too fancy. It’ll definitely be a family heirloom.

Wow. Nicely done. I love the details of the dowels/pins through the mortise/tenon joinery.

thanks for your positive comments. I really appreciate. Maybe one thing to add. For the next table, I’ll definately add a sliding dovetail in order to prevent wood movement. I’ve alreay seen that the sides went up a little bit (changing moisture).

  Sounds like you may have used linseed or similar oil for the finish. A more water-vapor resistant finish, like a wiping poly can help resist the effects of changing humidity. And, of course, starting with well-dried wood is important. It’s also a good idea, if your schedule allows to buy your wood ahead of time and give it a chance to acclimate to your shop’s humidity level before gluing it all together.

  Bernard, remember that you’ll fight a losing battle if you try to “prevent” wood movement. It’s best to accept it and work with it.
  
  The table looks great! It has a nice rich color to it. What species of oak did you use there in Europe?

Great Job..
I love the fact you tried not to use any metal fasteners..

BTW how did you attach the top ? Did you end up using screws ? I haven’t figured a way to attach a top with all wood fasteners

  Yes Joe, I ended up with four screws to attach the top and still allow movement.

Very nice! I see what you mean about the legs, but they give it a very robust, unpretentious, utilitarian look that I like. I’m not sure that a slight taper would be better, and a pronounced taper might have just looked silly. This is where Sketchup comes in handy – you can try out different things until you find one you like. But I like it the way it is!

Great table and overall project. The top came out very nice with continuity of grain. I like the finish options as the integrity of oak shines through. You should be proud of your work.

I will be starting wood projects soon, havent done any since shop class, but i look forward to the task. I finally have my own garage!!! This table is good inspiration, great job on it!
