This was my first big project. I made this TV stand for my wife to replace a smaller one. It is made of ribbon stripe african mahogany-both plywood and solid pieces. I’m not sure if this is the best type of mahogony to work with and it was my first time using it. I enjoyed working with it. For the finish I used a water based pore filler, then a water based dye with both red and brown mahagony colors to try to match some of our other furniture, and finally topcoated with satin polyurethane.

Like the curve on bottom,nice accents all around beatiful.Did you cut cove molding on table saw?

Thanks guys for all the comments. I appreciate the encouragement.

The pore filler was BEHLEN Water-Based Grain Filler- I mixed the dye after the filler step
The large cove molding was made on the table saw using a Norm technique :-)
The hardware is from Lee Valley- I like the celtic style.

Amazing! I just did my entertainment center in african mahogany too! I haven’t put a finish on it yet, as i’m waiting for this Canadian winter to mellow out and see some positive temperatures. Good job.

Nice work. You mentioned it might not be the best material to work with. What issues did you find difficult working with this type of Mahogany?

I didn’t have any issues with the african type. This is the only type of mahogany that I have ever worked with and I don’t know if other types (South American etc.) are really that much different to work with or make better quality furniture. I enjoyed working with it. The african mahogany rough sands and finish sands easily and didn’t burn too much on the table saw with a high tooth blade ( I think I used a 60 tooth blade) I will certainly use it again.

Very nice work. I especially like the arc in the front base. Too many time that is left straight across, and just that little detail helps lighten up a heavy base. I wanted to do that on the entertainment center I built, but I didn’t have any room due to equipment space requirements.

Mahogany is such a beautiful wood to look at a work with,and it ages nicely.

AJ, I was looking for ideas and your design is just what I want to do for my center. As mentioned earlier, the top molding really looks great.

thanks again for the comments. I made the design myself from a couple of pictures that my wife liked online. I just started drawing and thinking about how the plywood top with a mitered wrap would look with some vertical plywood pieces for the sides. I later added some edge banding with thin strips of solid wood that I made on the table saw with a jig. molding after that and then to the finish
