229 – Handy Glue Rollers

My recent Bow Arm Morris Chair project had me spreading glue like a mad man for the various bent laminations. It occurred to me that many of you may not be aware of how handy a decent glue roller can be. So I thought I’d take a few minutes to tell you about my preferred roller, where you can get it, and how it’s used.

Soon, you’ll be rolling glue like a mad man (or woman) too!

Hey Marc,

I just use an old credit card. When the glue dries, I just peel it off. And it’s free.

  Yeah i do the same thing with scrap wood. But that method is very limited on larger projects. The roller is faster and easier too. I can easily justify the $6-8 expense in my shop. :)

I keep old decks of cards in my shop for speading glue, shims, spacers, etc.

I have a question about the brayer – is this the recommended procedure?

Spread glue on first piece with brayer, pop brayer in water, clamp piece.
Shake water off brayer, spread glue on second piece, pop brayer in water, clamp piece.
Repeat for all pieces.
When done, wash off brayer.

  I keep a five gallon bucket near by when spreading lots of glue, and use the exact method you mention, just drop the entire brayer into the water between gluing.

Nice tip. I haven’t used a brayer in 35 years, but I remember how well it picked up and spread ink that was about the consistency of yellow glue.

But more importantly… the Cookie Monster shirt. That’s fantastic.
