79 – David Marks Project in Progress

This is a quick tour of David Marks projec tin progress. David loves to make massive turned sculptures and his current project is a doozie! It’s a huge disc-shaped turned piece featuring a big marquetry image on the front. David gives us a rundown on his process and some of the challenges he is facing with this piece. Doing inlay and marquetry on a curved workpiece is hard enough let along something that has a dome-shape! I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. It’s almost like an episode of Woodworks! Well, sort of.

Interesting that he chose poplar for the leaves. My first inclination would have been bamboo.

Matt, I used green poplar for my leaves as well on my wine cabinet door marquetry. It looks great and is very easy to work. I’m impressed with the scope of that project David’s doing, can’t wait to see it completed! That’s an advantage of being pro, to have the time to do something on that scale.

Thanks, Marc. These David Marks videos were sure worth the wait.

What’s the advantage of using apple ply? Is it more stable than other types of ply? I’m also wondering how expensive it is. I don’t recall ever seeing it at my local sheetgoods supplier.

  As far as apple ply goes, its pretty much an American version of Baltic Birch, but a little harder to find. It has more plies than the regular plywood so it does tend to stay flatter. So it makes a great substrate for veneering and apparently wacky disc-shaped turnings. :)

Finally the answer I’ve been waiting for! Do you know how long I’ve been wondering what to do with the stockpile of polynesian vegetable ivory nuts I have lying around the shop? Thanks David! (I’m kidding of course…David Marks is true inspiration to me…much like the Wood Whisperer!)

Have you heard anything further about this piece? I went to David’s site and the site of the Hawaii gallery, but couldn’t locate this piece. I’d really love to see the completed work with all its colors.

I saw the piece about 6 weeks ago and it is a work in progress. This level of detail might take David a year to finish. (See if he takes that as a chalenge to prove us wrong)
