DIY Adjustable-Height Work Support

Video - December 16, 2022

This project takes place back in my home garage and focuses on building a DIY Adjustable Height Work Support using basic materials and a small set of tools. When you’re working with a planer, chop saw, or any tool that benefits from extra outfeed support, having a stable, height-adjustable stand makes a huge difference. Instead of running around to catch a board mid-cut, this simple stand gives you reliable support exactly where you need it.

The entire DIY Adjustable Height Work Support is built from common lumber, a couple of 2x4s and a 1×4, making it affordable and approachable for just about any shop. The design creates a vertical channel that allows the support to move up and down, locking into place with dowel pins for strength and repeatability. Hole spacing can be customized to give you more height options, and the stand is sturdy enough to handle real-world shop use, even supporting full body weight when locked in place.

One of the best things about this build is its versatility. It works as planer outfeed support, chop saw support, or even as a general-purpose stand around the shop. Because it’s simple, adjustable, and built from inexpensive materials, it’s easy to modify or refine to fit your own workflow. Whether you’re working in a fully powered shop or a limited-power garage setup, this DIY Adjustable Height Work Support is a practical upgrade that improves safety, efficiency, and overall shop comfort.
