43 – Interview with Kaleo Kala

Many of you might already be familiar with Kaleo. He runs KaleosWorkshop.com and does the This Week in Wood Podcast. He is also recent graduate of the Australian School of Fine Furniture. And now that he’s back in the states he’s gearing up to start his own woodworking business. I was able to spend a whole afternoon with Kaleo and it was like hanging with an old friend. I decided to do a brief interview with him (this video) as well as have him show us a few rudimentary hand tool techniques (next video). Enjoy!

Excellent! I would love to find a place where I could do that stateside (other than seminar / weekend gigs) where I could go continuously AND keep my job…. But, then reality kicks in and I wake up and there are my bills and kids staring me in the face. Glad you were able to take the time! <Smile!)

I’m sorry, I couldn’t take my eyes off that In-n-out cup. I guess I shouldn’t have watched this before dinner. Maybe In-n-out for lunch tomorrow. :)

I’d like to hear more about where in particular he stayed, the cost of living (rent, etc.) and the real cost of the program itself. Maybe that is too personal or maybe that is already posted somewhere?

Great segment, Marc. Unfortunately, it ended all too soon. Looking forward to follow-up segments with Kaleo.

I am wondering about something. If Kaleo is from Hawaii, and he spent two years in Australia, what’s he doing in Phoenix? Is he setting up shop in Arizona, or just dropping in on The Spagnuolo?

Yeah, that In & Out cup was a major distraction. Had to go out for a double/double with fries. Great series.

Mark, I have been following your podcasts for a while and they are very refreshing. I has listened to Wood Talk online with you and Matt discussing In-N-Out and it was killing me. Worse yet, I was suppose to fly into SFO this week and the first thing I do when I arrive and get my rental is hit the In-N-out by the airport.

Then I saw the show with Kaleo and you and I saw the cup. I forgot everything about WW and was dreaming of a 2 by 4 burger, or a 3 by 3 burger. You’re killing me dude because I’m stuck here in Connecticut where there are no In-N Outs.

Keep up the great Show and stop the In-N Out Teasing ;)

PS. to Pat in Monroe. Woodcraft in Manchester CT has excellent weekend classes. Bob Van Dyke is a contributing editor to Fine Woodworking and has great classes. I was at one on Hand planes with Garrett Hack and it was excellent. Had lunch with him and he is the nicest guy. Check it out !!

In and out is overrated! You west coasters sure love it though don’t you?

Great idea with the series. Too bad you only tease us with 8 minute videos. Can’t wait to see how he tunes and uses a bench plane. I’m confortable with my block plane, but unfamiliar with the old stanley 4 that I inherited.

Indeed, pretty cool that Kaleo is just dropping in, Marc. I would expect him to set up shop someplace near the water, but you never know.

Dave:

In-n-Out is probably the best burger joint ever. They only are in California, Nevada and Arizona (only in the last few years). The food is awesome (the cut the potatoes into fries on site :-) and the lines are huge. A double-double is two patties, two cheese. It’s even better “animal style” :-)

Hey, Kaleo. I lived in VA for over 15 years. (I’m now in Colorado.) In what part of the state will you be setting up shop?

VA huh? I’m in VB, but I’m guessing he’ll either set up in NOVA or Richmond because I don’t think that we have the client base (or galleries) that you would need in the Tidewater area.

I find it funny everyone is excited about the in and out. Where as i only noticed Kaleo was wearing an All Black shirt.
