I am an amateur woodworker in the greater Pittsburgh area. I use to work for a custom high end furniture shop. I want to eventually do it on my own.

My shop is approximately 720 sq. ft. located in the basement of my home. I am blessed with a lot more space than most woodworkers, but still crave for more. My shop is still evolving. I am constantly making upgrades, jigs and modifications to the shop and tools. I, like many woodworkers, spend more time on the shop than on actual projects. Looking to get some projects in the shop soon.

My latest project is a modified design of Marc’s torsion box work bench.

Nice space. You might want to put something under the wood you have upended on the concrete. Even roofing tar paper. Moisture wicks well into end grain. I like all the cubies holding your stuff.

Haha me too; I do shop improvements which do take time from my woodworking projects. But, a more organized shop gets me motivated to be in there because things go more smoothly.

Like the bench; that table space is like gold. The space underneath can be used to keep the top clear.

Havng a toilet in the shop is a nice touch, now you never have to leave the shop !

Jack,

Like the shop. I like the cubby unit and may steel it! How do you like that Rigid band saw? I plan on getting a 14 in eventually and have played with it. It seems nice for the price, any input?

  So far the saw has treated me just fine. You defiantly want to upgrade from the blade that comes with it, as the stock blade drifts a lot. I defiantly want to get a fence system and cool blocks, but for now its good.

Nice shop, Jack. Lots of space. I’ve got a basement shop also. I could use some more space, I built my office in the basement first so I got what was left for the shop. I might also steal your idea for the cubby holes…if I could find a place to put it. What kind of lathe is that?

  Its similar to the lathes they have at harbor freight. I think my dad bought that one from a cumming tools sale, like the companies that take a truck load of tools and sell them at fire departments and parking lots.

Nice shop. The only problem that I see is with a potty in the shop, you are only one bad bowl of chili from running yourself out of the shop. :)

I like the toliet out in the open, it would be a good spot to think about that next project

Hah! I couldn’t concentrate on the pot if I could look at all my stuff…

I also like the cubbies. I may have to incorporate something like that in my shop. Do you find them getting really dusty, not having doors?

Looks like those weights get used quite a bit :) Also looks like if you get snowed in you’ve got plenty of wood to keep you busy.

I know the feeling for longing for more space… I have mentioned a couple of times to he wife that I could move from my 1/3 space in the garage to the basement. She just isn’t falling for it.
