I’ve been a woodworker for years (my dad has a nice shop), but recently decided to set up a shop of my own in my 12′ x 24′ garage, which I’m sharing with yard tools, bikes, and camping gear. So far I have a table saw and a planer, a few smaller hand-held power tools, and a few hand tools–it’s a good start (and there’s not a lot of space for much more). I like the window next to the workbench, and even though there’s no heat or A/C, I love to be in there.

Also have my shop in lawrence, ks very nice shop….its got to be a sweat box in august though

Very nice, it looks very practical. I have recently move my yard tools into a shed and got rid of a lot of stuff that was no longer needed. So now there is room to work.But my wife car and my Motorcycle still need to sleep inside every night. :) I agree with you that a window would be nice… something worth looking into. You’re off to a good start, Doug. I like the window behind the bench. I’ve got one behind my lathe, though it’s quite dirty so the view is a bit obstructed. Now you need to get a storage building for the bikes and yard tools…and maybe for overflow lumber storage. Enjoy!

I actually enjoy working in a tight little space…as long as its not too tight. Part of the fun is figuring out how to place everything so it all works well and flows together. Great start and I hope you enjoy it!

nice shop could always add a window ac unit in that window make it nice and cool for you while your working on the bench.

  Yep, I’ve considered that, especially after so many days of 100-degree weather here in northeast KS. I’m somewhat hesitant, given that I don’t have dust-collection in the shop–I’m assuming that would foul a a window unit pretty quickly…maybe it would just mean I’d have to clean the filter often.
  
  I did insulate the shop when I finished it off, though, so A/C is a good idea.

I enjoyed looking at this space, because it is pretty much the exact same size garage I’ll be setting up in about a month. I decided to spend the time, money, and energy to build a small garden tool shed to make sure that my eventual space is just that…mine. Good luck with the woodworking!

My shop is in Hutchinson Ks.. I added a garage behind the garage so to speak. It is 15′ x 20′ with 3 windows, heat (small electric) and AC (window unit) and I more or less live in it. (I’m retired)
My table saw looks just like yours but the shop has a lot more dusty junk sitting around.
I also got a prefab barn for the garden equipment.

Hi Doug. Curious about the area. You say 12 x 24 feet, 250-499 square feet, how do you work that out?
I notice you have the same DeWalt thicknesser as I have. I am trying to find a way to use this machine in conjunction with an out-feed table for the table saw. Any suggestions?

  I had to pick a shop-size category when I submitted my shop description, and at 288 square feet, the 250-499 category was the one that my shop fell into. That said, I suppose I actually have somewhat less than that in terms of useable space, given that one whole wall of my garage is still used for storage of stuff like yard tools and camping gear, etc. Gotta get that shed built in the back yard one of the these days so I can use my garage for what it was intended for…more tools! ;-)

  Yes–it’s a Jet JPS-10, with cast-iron wings. Got it last fall from Tools-Plus.com, with a free-shipping deal. I love my saw.

Soon as you get rid of stuff on the far side you will have plenty of room i saw a guy whos shop was in a stoarage space of an apartment. Now that was incredable. Table saw was on caster with a long table with wings that raised up and plainer, router table, small virt sander, o ilating sander were all on a seperate inserts that fit into one station. And his hand tools were mounted to the top of the unit ver tight he pulled it out and worked out in parking lot

Doug. Here is a tip if you want the shop to “feel” bigger. Paint it white. Amazing how much more room you feel you have and also the light is reflected as well.
