As usual I enjoyed WTO. Last Saturday I purchased the Highland Woodworking Steel City 14″ Bandsaw. It’s great and I love it. The $499 package does not include the extra 6″ riser or the fence. Those were included in the $699 package. I’m picking up the riser later and possibly the fence, if I don’t go with the Kraig instead.

    • thewoodwhisperer says:

Hey Bill. Do you know for sure that you need the riser? I have had a 6″ riser in my 14″ saw for years and I have yet to actually need the extra capacity. Might just be me though. :)

Thanks for the reply. I’ll probably never resaw a board that wide but I do plan to cut out several bowl blanks from logs I have and I already know some of them will not fit. Miss you on shop cam. Can’t wait for the new shop.

Is there a way to load Wood Talk Online onto my MP3 player? I don’t own an iPod, so can’t use the Itunes download [also Itunes won't load on my new Vista computer )-:]. I listen to my MP3 player in the shop and would like to hear Wood Talk Online there. Many thanks.

Hi Joyce. You see the link above the little gray player at the top of this post? It says “Download the mp3″. If you right click that link, and select “Save As” or “Save Target As”, you’ll be able to save the mp3 to your desktop. Now what you do with it from there depends on your mp3 player. But every episode of WTO is available as an mp3 download.

      Good luck!

For large rough lumber where the danger is minimized because of lumber size, then I use these weight lifting gloves because the finger tips are open and you still have full control.

    • Matt says:

I use something similar from time to time. I actually have a pair that help to minimize the vibrations off my tools like sanders. And they protect my hands from splinters too.

      • JHop says:

Friend of mine has a pair of motorcycle riding gloves. They have a silicone gel insert at the base of the palm and the calous pads at the base of the fingers. (supposed to reduce hand-numbing vibrations from the bike to keep your hands on the ‘bars for those long trips.)

Would those work as well, or would that be more cost than benefit?

        • Matt says:

most definitely that would help. I use to be an avid mountain biker and I suffered from finger numbness until I bought something very similar…the difference is noticable!

  4. Tim Kremer says:

The biggest message I got from the show is this: The best method for cleaning your dust collector filter is not to wash it, but to beat it with a dead horse. :)

    • thewoodwhisperer says:

lol. You know, I think that was definitely the intended take-home message. ;)

    • Matt says:

I’m glad to hear someone’s finally listening to my pearls of wisdom LOL!!

    • Eric says:

Wouldn’t some compressed air do the trick? I think I read someone say that that’s what you should use to clean out abranet sheets.

      • thewoodwhisperer says:

I think you can Eric, but you need to be careful not to do any damage. Also, I wonder if there is a realistic chance of lodging the particles in deeper if, lets say, you sprayed the air from the wrong direction?

  5. A very interesting show, although I do miss the knitting lead in :-) Just refound your site and this podcast after listing to you and Matt through the spring. Thanks for the info and entertainment.
