Twitter and The Webcam
March 27, 2007 | Filed Under Blog
Hey peeps. One of my primary goals with The Wood Whisperer is to bring together two of my favorite topics: woodworking and technology. So I will occasionally try new things on the site that could make your user experience even more fun and helpful. There is a lot of buzz going around these days about a new web application called Twitter. Its basically a social networking site that allows you to keep track of your friends. The idea is to answer the question, “What are you doing?”. And every time you update, your friends can see what you are up to. Well, I thought this would make a nice companion to our webcam. A picture is great, but wouldn’t it be cool if you could actually see a few words describing what I’m working on? And since I have the keyboard right there, I can update the text very easily. So when you check out The Webcam Page, you should see the Twitter Box below the picture.
Now if you want to take it a step further, you can go to Twitter and sign up for an account. Then you can simply follow me directly. Let me know what you all think. It may just be a fad, but its kinda fun.

Got something to say?

Marc, I like the idea…I’ve been wondering what you’ve been building and who has been in the shop with you. But, don’t worry so much about making the webcam experience 100% interactive. Get your projects built, then tell us about them. I’m leaning toward twitter being a bit of a fad.
I’m With Erik on this. I may have been the first to send you messages that Nichol was kind enough to answer. If your anything like the rest of us wood working folk, time is money and a bunch of “what are you doing now?” questions can slow you down. Your blog and videos are top notch and its this content that keep me coming back.
Wish I had one, I think.
The Webcam can only tell us so much with its lens. I think the text part (Twitter) is a good Idea. However, It seems that Twitter has been moving a little slow.
Thanks Marc for inviting us into your shop and having a look at your day to day business. I don’t think I would want a camera on me all day while I’m at work.
Yeah Twitter is acting funny. I haven’t been using it long enough to know if this is normal. I am sure they are having trouble dealing with all the attention they are getting. You just never know when an idea will take off.
Marc, why would you want to do that when you can talk to us just as easily. i would prefer to click on play and watch you do something while you are explaining it to us.
off that for a minute. will you travel to Tulsa, Ok and do a two day class project with 6-8 students. if so what would it cost to do it. i think woodcraft here might go for something like that and use their shop for the class. let me know if that is possible. thanks Dean Knight
Just remember guys, this webcam is by no means a replacement for the podcast. Its just something extra. And the amount of work required to point a web cam and write a word or two is nothing compared to the work involved scripting, filming, and editing a video. I would make videos every day if I could. But if I have to be in the shop not making podcasts, then I think its cool for people to watch the webcam.
And Dean, I will email you directly about the potential class.
