Toy Box/Blanket Chest – Project of the Week
This week’s project comes from Robert who writes:
This is my first attempt at building furniture. I decided to just dive in as a learning experience. The blanket chest was inspired by a Fine Wood Working article by John Mcalevey (March/April 1998).The chest was built for my two and a half year old granddaughter to serve as aw toy box now and hope chest later. Cherry and soft maple. Thanks for all the help I have found on your web site.

Robert,
Great job on your first furniture project, very impressive! It looks like you have the touch and I’m sure this is only the beginning for you.

Very nice indeed! Your granddaughter will surely come to appriciate this heirloom piece more and more with each passing year. What type of finish did you use?

That is just awesome. I’m like you and haven’t built any furniture yet but this give me hope that even amateurs with help can do good work. Nice job.
LARRY Q JUNE 21 08 9:OOPM WOW! BEAUTIFUL TOYBOX/BLANKET CHEST – I LIKE THE CONTRAST IN WOODS . IS THAT THROUGH TENONS AND MORTISE JOINERY AT TOP? IF SO, LIKE TO DETAILS. WHAT WAS YOUR FINISH? YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER WILL CHERISH THIS. DESTINED TO BE AN HEIRLOOM.
Great looking piece. claude
Thanks for the comments. Quite surprised pleased to see Emma’s toy box as project of the week after seeing all the previous projects’ quality. The front and rear panel rails are thru tenons with 1/8″ proud. I finished wit 2 coats of Bulls Eye Seal Coat and four coats of General Finishes semi gloss Arm-R- Seal wiped on. Here is a link to the FWW article that was my inspiration and guide.

Nice Job !!! I like the contrast of the two woods. The finish looks awesome. Keep up the good work
Beautiful chest! I’ve always wanted to build one and now I want to build one like yours! Are the plans available? Did you use any type of safety hinges, so as not to slam on little fingers? Great Job!
