THIS Is Carpentry – A New Online Magazine
Just recently, carpenter extraordinaire Gary Katz released the first issue of his new online magazine, “THIS is Carpentry”. Its available for FREE at THISisCarpentry.com. Interactive articles, informative and interactive ads, video content…….this one has it all! Now I don’t know about most of you, but I often wish I had a greater understanding of trim carpentry, and I really feel a well-rounded woodworker should know some of these important concepts and techniques. So this is a publication I will be paying a good deal of attention to. If you have a chance, check it out. By the way, do you know the difference between supporting molding and terminating molding? I do now!

Great find Marc! I took a quick look through it just now, but will be reading it more carefully later in the week. It looks like a really good read.
Great Stuff! I can admit that I didn’t know jack squat about moldings… now I do.
This should be great. I saw Gary at a JLC Live show a few years back. If you haven’t picked it up yet, he has a great book on Trim Carpentry.
Very cool! I love that the way they are delivering the content. It’s like reading a real magazine on-line. I wish Fine Woodworking would do the same. I’m running out of space for all my paper copies!
Nice tip! Thanks!
The content is not really for me but I do love the format. Maybe some other woodworking magazines will copy this format.
I love the mobile worksite trolley near the end. I’m tempted to make one for DIY stuff.
Thanks for posting this Marc. Great articles. I like that they can do stuff in depth, unlike most print magazines. An idea who’s time has come!
Great Idea! Wish more mags were available this way. Imagine being able to follow up on an add without having to set your magazine down and look up a website for the company your interested in or to remember to do it some time in the future. And having it on your system instead of collecting dust! My wife would be thrilled if all my subs were virtual paper. Thanks for the heads up Marc!
Great mag. The molding article was very informative. I have done crown molding at my own house and for friends and relatives, and some types I just kind of puzzle over which way to install it. I need to look at those jobs surreptitiously and see if I installed them in the “supporting” or “terminating” positions. :-)
Now I know why I never wanted to do stairs. Think I would hire that done!!
Well done mag.
Tiny, tiny, unreadably tiny font size. Awkward, badly designed and difficult to use interface…
I won’t be visiting them again.
I liked the content, but the format was implemented badly. On my system it took over both of my monitors (I’ve never seen a window do that, usually when I make something “full screen”, it only fills one of the monitors). So, I had a bunch of empty space on the left, and then the “magazine” was split over the empty space between my two monitors, and then I had a bunch of empty space on the right. I couldn’t resize or move the window or move the image within the window. It was re ally hard to read the arti cles when they were spli t between the two moni tors.
I wasn’t allowed to send feedback without registering, which is why I’m doing it here. Hopefully Gary will see it.
The content was great, but there was a reason people gave up on the “make it look like a magazine” thing back when the web was young. Trust your readers, and let them choose the window size, font size, etc, that will work for them. There’s no way that you can pick a layout that will work on every machine.
It’s a great idea – good luck getting the details worked out!
I had to unsubscribe. I know my computer is old…but this program totally wipes out every resource there is in the thing. The first issue was readable, but this one I can only get about a page our two until the hard drive is wacking out full time and the computer slows to a halt…until I have to use the Windows Task manager to shut it down. Too bad as I like the articles.
