The Wood Whisperer Store - Do Over
November 13, 2007 | Filed Under Blog
For those of you who don’t know, we have an Amazon.com affiliate store setup here at TheWoodWhisperer.com. It has served us well in the past and people really seem to like the concept. You buy something you need and the show receives a commission. About 8 months ago in an effort to improve the store, we stopped using Amazon’s free software and invested in a more powerful, more customizable, 3rd party program. The back end of the program is difficult to use and set up and I have never been happy with the product. Furthermore, I have had numerous complaints from shoppers about the crappy search function and the inability to find what they are looking for.
So its time to give Amazon’s free software another shot. Fortunately, they’ve made a few changes and my “coding skills” have improved. So now the store is fully integrated into our website. There are many improvements: its easier on the eyes, has a simple interface, and has a more robust search. Sometimes simpler is just BETTER.
I already set up several custom categories with hand-picked items. If there is a category you would like me to add, just let me know. And if you have any ideas for custom categories, I would be happy to hear your suggestions. So take a look around, maybe do some early holiday shopping. Or maybe treat yourself to a few new toys. As always, Nicole and I appreciate your support.

Got something to say?

Marc,
Really nice! I seem to be able to use Amazon Prime now if I want to.
Woohoo! Another plus! Thanks for the FYI Roger.
Hi Mark,
Looks good… Can I make a wish list on your store so my wife knows what I want, need, must have!!!!
Not quite clear on how video games are linked to woodworking, but I still have much to learn.
Ok so I am able to make your wishlist appear in the store now, but I dont seem to make it so you can add things to the wish list. Its just pulling in your wishlist from Amazon.com. Soooooo… I’ll keep diggin. THanks for the feedback.
Well, you see Shawn. I am a woodworker. I like video games. I made a store. I put video games in the store. Makes perfect sense to me. ;)
hey marc nice job
how about a turning section? just an idea.
done
Well you could look at it like this, the more video games you play the need for a better desk comes. Thus the gap between video gaming and woodworking has been solved! LOL
do you guys get the commission only for items explicitly put in your store, or is there some link we can use for random shopping at amazon? (ie, if we were going to order some random books, etc.)
Matt
Hey Matt. You see that link at the top of the page that says, “Go to Amazon.com (we still get credit)”? That will take you to Amazon’s site and will bring the referral with you. So anything you buy from Amazon, in any category, will count.
Thanks!
Let us know when we can have our wish list through you. Not that anyone ever buys me anything, but, just in case!
Good…then you get the commission on the new Powermatic BS I just purchased with the riser block and mobile base. Because…you da man!
Ummm….no sir…..YOU are da man! We really appreciate it.
Marc, Just purchased a Grizzly Planer off of the Amazon link the day before you made changes. Hopefully, you will get credit for it. Love the site and the tip to get Google Sketch Up that is awesome it really helps with the layout of projects,
How about a Begenner Woodworking Power Tool Section? I am new to woodworking and cannot afford thousands of dollars on each individual tool right now. A basic table saw, thickness planar, plunge router, router table, clamps, etc.
FYI the Grizzly G0505 Thickness Planar has less snipe that my brother in-law’s Dewalt.
