Cherry and Walnut Bed – Viewer Project

Nothing is more rewarding than building a project that would have cost thousands of dollars from a furniture store, but costs you only time and materials. Let’s check out this beautiful bed that Matt designed and built:

I have finally finished my bed project! Here’s the story. I designed this bed by jotting down some ideas and it evolved as I worked. It has taken me well longer than it should have, but it’s finally done. I used mostly cherry, some walnut for the beading, and cherry ply for the panels. Most woodworkers don’t seem to like seeing sapwood, but I actually got a compliment for “gum streak” on the footboard from a cousin that works for a cabinet company. There are a few plugs on the tops of the headboard and footboard that are cocobolo. I used oak for the rails and stained it antique cherry, because I just had some good oak the right length for the rails. I’m pretty excited and my son has been very patient. I think he’s pleased. Hopefully it’s strong enough to handle years of abuse as he and his brother get bigger.

In the final part of this series, I assemble and attach the base, install the handles, and apply the final finish to the top. This project was an incredible learning experience, and not in the way you might think. I actually found it incredibly challenging to step back from my primary shop tools, and focus only on the portable power tools. Not only did I find new ways of doing things, but I have a new found appreciation for the tools I have been taking granted for years. But hopefully you’ll see now that even with a very basic set of tools, you can still produce high quality furniture.

A few of the topics covered in this part:

  • Constructing the base.
  • Gluing up miters using the tape trick.
  • Attaching the base using pocket screws.
  • Attaching the custom handles.

Black Walnut Chair – Viewer Project

I have the highest respect for chair makers. Its such a great combination of form and function and its a great test of a woodworker’s abilities in both design and construction. Let’s check out this beautiful chair built by Cameron in North Carolina:

Just finished a chair project I have been working on for the last few weeks. Here are the results. The wood is American Black Walnut. I used loose tenon joinery throughout the chair. I had access to a milling machine so I used it to experiment with cutting a few of the mortises. It worked extremely well and will make it difficult to go back to the router! The back was formed in the vacuum press with 1/16″ walnut veneer I got from Veneersupplies.com per your suggestion on video #17 A Pressing Matter. The finish is an oil/varnish mixture. Thanks for the site. It is a tremendous resource for woodworkers of all skill levels.

The absolute worst time to find out you’ve made a mistake is while the glue is drying. So this part focuses strongly on the importance of a dry assembly, which I consider to be an essential part of the glue up process. By the end we’ll have a partially glue-up entertainment center.

A few of the topics covered in this part:

  • Gluing trim pieces.
  • Using biscuits.
  • Clamping strategies.
  • Using a wood filler to hide miter flaws.
  • Cutting the big bevels on the top and bottom trim.
  • Sanding.
  • Dry assembly strategy.
  • Measuring and cutting the back panels.
  • Initial glueup.

timbmateAnd this is the filler I recommended in the video. If you’ve had bad experiences with fillers in the past, you really need to give this stuff a shot. Shopping through this affiliate link will also help out the show.
