Very nice project. I saw this on Woodworks 2 weeks ago, This is on my project list. Where did you get the plane iron? Nice craftsmanship indeed!

Very, very, very cool, Jeff!

Great project… I am planning to do that myself… Marc… Do you have a source for a good pattern to use to create my own handplane???? I know David Marks did this in a show… Any ideas?
Beautiful plane – thanks for sharing!
110 miles? Good grief!
Great job. I know it took some awesome skill to get that made. I’ve been working with purple heart for the first time this week and it it freaking hard!
Hey Gang,
The iron is a Hock Iron, part# PI175 and cost’s about $50 from Hock. As far as the pattern, you don’t need one. Thats the great part about making the hand plane, you can design it anyway you want. If you want to take a look at how to make one, go to DIYNET.COM and pull up the “current videos” section. When it starts playing one of David’s shows, there is a small box at the top left that states “Search Videos”. Type “handplane” in that box and it will bring up the Woodworks show where David made one. Thats all you need, there are no “special” requirements. Any questions, just ask. I would be happy to help. The great thing about this project is that the plane cuts shavings so thin, you can read the newspaper through them. Have fun!
Everyone have a Great Thanksgiving!!!
Marc, any chance of setting up the “Turkey Cam” where we can watch Nicole cook? : )
Give that thing some sun! Looks a little brown to me.
very nice
damn! purpleheart really loses its purple!
That is a real beauty.
Darrel, There are two really good books on making your own hand planes, Making Traditional Wooden Planes by Whelan. This book describes how to make many styles of planes and your own plane irons. Making and Mastering Woodenplanes by Finck describes making Krenov style, 3 piece planes and how to use them. Hock, (plane iron mfgr.) also sells a really good plan
