Our New Newsletter

While at the New Media Expo this year, I attended a session that was focused on newsletters vs. RSS feeds as a means of communication with readers/viewers. It was an eye-opening experience but I am not going to bore you with the details. Let’s just say that I realized I would have unsubscribed from my own email list months ago, lol. My two gripes? 1. The automatic emails sent out by Feedburner are rarely formatted properly. 2. If I post everyday, an email goes out everyday. I honestly don’t want an email everyday from ANY source.
So I needed a better solution. That solution comes in the form of a weekly newsletter. The newsletter will go out on the weekend and will recap everything that was posted on the site. It will also contain links so that you can go directly to the content you are interested in. And depending on how things go, we might be able to add supplemental content to the newsletter just to make it extra special. :)
Now here is what you need to know. If you are currently an email subscriber, you are already signed up for the new newsletter. No action is required on your part. If you are NOT signed up for our emails, all you need to do is follow this link, and subscribe using our secure form. And that’s it. If all goes well, the first newsletter should go out this weekend.

Sounds good! Just one question. Do the email newsletter and the blog have the same content? Specifically, for those of us who currently follow your goings-on via a feed agregator (i.e. Google Reader) will we miss anything if we continue to read your blog rather than sign up for the newsletter?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Will the news letter show up on the RSS feed?

  3. Hey Andy. The email newsletter’s content will generally come from the blog. I may, at some point, be motivated to add something unique to it, but nothing major. Each week I will probably write something at the top discussing the previous week and any opinions and thoughts I might have.. But for the most part, its just content from the blog.

David, excellent question. I am looking into it now. If the newsletter system I use allows me to create a PDF or some other “hard” version of the newsletter, I will indeed post it on the site and in the feed.

Sorry if this is kind of a repeat question, but I’m not sure I’m following what you’re trying to do here. So if I stay with the RSS feed (which I like, and do not want to change), will I miss some new content you are planning to put out only through the newsletter?

Personally, I like the format you have, where comments collect under the post. That seems a bit complicated with a weekly newsletter with multiple subjects. And how do I “zoom” in on workshop tour images and such, for example? I may be totally misunderstanding what you’re trying to do.

  5. Hey Mattias. Andy asked the same question above. There will not be any substantial new content in the newsletter. Maybe some small things if I feel compelled. But the newsletter is nothing more than a summary of the last week’s blog activity.

The comments come from the website itself, and will always be available. So if you see a topic or a Project of the week that you would like to comment on, just click the link in the newsletter and it will take you to the site where you can comment.

As far as pictures go, you can click on the pictures right in the newsletter and see the larger versions.

So hopefully that makes more sense now. If you like using the RSS feed, please keep using it. The newsletter will be just another way to get the content.

Considering I might need to check into the Betty Ford Clinic for overuse of this site, I think me getting the RSS feed or the newsletter would be redundant:D

I think I’ll pass on the newsletter seeing as how I’m on your site just about everyday anyway. Claude
