Occasional Table- Project of the Week
This week’s project comes from Jason (aka cfiiman in the chatroom). He writes:
It is made out of solid black walnut and a curly maple decorative border…I went with dovetails on the rails and for my first time I think they turned out ok, the table is finished with tung oil…I am in the middle of a “matching” table, sort of, but I am going with finger joints instead of dovetails b/c I really think they look good and mortise & tenon rack in the bottom. Thanks guys!
It’s a very unique piece that includes some unconventional features. I for one would like to know more the joinery used for the brace at the bottom. Nice work Jason!

Very cool piece. I’m with Marc…I want to know more about that joinery as well!
Jason, great piece. I think the dovetails look great and I would sure do them again. That walnut has some pretty coloring to it. you did a nice job on the table
Good job! How did you finish it?
Looks good over-all, but as a design element, I would not have seperated the sap-wood pieces in the top. The straight line between the points jumps out. Put together, it would have been smaller in total width, but more flowing.
Longhair, yeah I would have to agree, I will not make that mistake again, but thanks for pointing out my error lol…Finish is Tung Oil, that is all I use, but I am fairly new to trying “fine furniture” making so I am excited to use other things, just not sure how yet…I have a table as a matching piece except everything I did wrong on this one I am redoing on the other one, I’ll send it to Marc when I get it done and maybe it can get on here and get feedback from you guys about the differences…
