New Comment Avatars

January 21, 2008 | Filed Under Blog

Many of you have already noticed the new avatars next to your names in our comment threads (the default is the Wood Whisperer logo). I have installed a new plugin that works with Gravatars. Gravatars are Globally Recognized Avatars. It’s a super simple way of personalizing your comments on many websites around the web. If you leave a comment on a Gravatar-enabled site, it will automatically recognize your email address and assign your avatar to the comment post. It’s free and all you need to give them is your email address and a picture to use as an avatar. Sign up here.

Nothing really to say, just testing the Gravitar thingie.

Oh wait, I do have something! I picked up a little jig at the Woodworking Shows in Columbus called the EZ-Burr. It’s made for putting a burr on scrapers. I tried it out last night for the first time and darned if it isn’t both easy and effective. In 10 minutes I had a well-tuned scraper and beautiful fluffy shavings and didn’t have to think at all about holding a burnisher at a consistent angle.

Any time I can make my life easier for under $50 I’m a happy woodworker.

  17. Steve on January 22nd, 2008 12:33 pm

    Nice feature. I love technology!

Re putting a burr on scrapers — Lee Valley offers the Veritas Variable Burnisher for $31.00 it lets you set the angle from 0 to 15 degrees. It has saved my butt several times.

  18. Allen Lindsey (AlleninOH) on January 22nd, 2008 1:17 pm

The one I bought will let you set angles from 0 to 15 degrees as well, and it can be used on a gooseneck scraper which, unless I’m misunderstanding how the Veritas works, you can’t do with their burnisher.

    Either way, well-burnished scrapers rule!

  19. Kip from Nothern Illinois on January 22nd, 2008 2:08 pm

Marc, Thanks for teaching me something usefull once again.

The discussion about automatic burring tools is interesting.

I am curious to know if other woodworkers have a struggle when they sharpen scrapers using a hand held burnishing tool.

I am able to get an edge that scraps fairly well but do not see the fluffy shavings realized by Allen and Steve mentioned above.

I just figureed I need more practice to master the skill.

So, Marc or anyone that cares to comment , am I deluding myself ,
is this sharpening skil beyond this woodbutchers grasp,
or should I fork over the $30 and move on with other skill building activities?

Thanks again for the Gravitar info

    Kip

Hey Marc, delete that last post, maybe this one will work.

  23. thewoodwhisperer on January 22nd, 2008 11:04 pm

Come on Schwigs, get it together man! lol

  24. thewoodwhisperer on January 22nd, 2008 11:21 pm

Hey Kip. Burnishing a scraper is not very difficult. And its not like honing a chisel where one or two degrees makes a difference. If your scrapers aren’t coming out right, I would guess that something is going wrong before the burnishing. And if its the burnishing, its probably an issue with the pressure and not with the angle. But those burnishing tools do a fine job of giving you a perfect burr. Just make sure you do everything properly up to that point. :)

    Testing….

I went to the columbus show too. That was my first show, very cool. I almost bought that new Forest woodworker blade, so close. Instead I got some files, a zero clearance insert, and a pair of calipers. Great demonstrations, great venders, overall an A++.
