Move: Update

Hey folks. Just wanted to let everyone know we are alive and well and in the new house. We are tired, sore, and my fingers hurt from playing with lots of little tiny wires (hooking up ceiling fans, lights, and running ethernet cable throughout the house).

So now I will be going back to the shop to build/film my last project there. Next week I have to move all my tools. I will document as much of the process as possible. But at certain points I may be way too focused on getting my stuff there in one piece to worry about the camera. So we’ll see how that goes. Wish me luck!

By the end of the week, the site should be back to normal and we can get back to talking woodworking. Thanks for your patience everybody!

    Good luck then ;)

I hope you will be able to update by the end of the week… you have set expectations here :p

Hey Marc Just concentrate on your move and don’t worry about us. I’m sure everybody on here has moved from time to time. It sucks but it gotta be done.

Rock on, My man. Get those dishes put away! :D

I’m wondering how you’re running that ethernet cable through the house. I’m also wondering why you’re doing it instead of just using a wireless router. (I’m sure you have a good reason, I’m just wondering what it is.)

Be careful. You’re no good to us if you throw out your back while moving the refrigerator.

Hey Germain. We are lucky that this house has an attic. So I decided to get my butt up there and run hard lines everywhere. Nicole and I do a lot of bandwith heavy things like file transfers, streaming web video, online gaming, live webcams, skype calls, etc… Oh and that silly little podcast of mine results in some serious upload times that quickly bog down the system. Most times, Nicole can’t even work if I am in the middle of an upload. So we are pretty good candidates for a reliable hard line connection. But we still use wifi for general surfing using the laptops.

Plus, with cat5e, all you have to do is purchase a gigabit switch, and all of your internal traffic is at 1000Mb. And you don’t have to worry about the microwave knocking out your transfer. (Sorry, the network engineer in me is coming out.)

But seriously, hard wiring is the only way to go when you depend on your connection. Wireless is for convenience.

        Marc,

Even wireless G has an expected rste of 54mb. Most likely this is faster than your WAN connection. T3’s only run at 45mbps. I hope you’re not paying $5k a month for your access.

I also recommend a hardwired home network if you have the means. My wife and I built a new house in 2003 and we had the contractor run several cat5e and RG6 cables to every room. All the cables go to a 48 port patch panel in the basement. It worked out really good recently when we switched from Satellite TV to IPTV. The technician was able to install all the components without running any new cables. He just connected the set-top boxes to my home network and replaced my DSL modem/router. Any of the runs can be used as Internet, IPTV, or landline phone. Maybe one day I’ll connect a wireless access point somewhere in the house and have both. Cheers, Steve.

where on earth do U2 get the energy!

Good luck with the move. I know I hate doing it myself. My philosophy on moving is that I never ask people to help me move so that they don’t ask me to help them. It’s worked so far. Although if you need some temporary storage for some tools, I could help ya out with that

    Marc,
Get the kid next door to take snap shots of the tool move.

And ofcourse we’ll be expectecting a grand tour of the new shop so we can all be jeaulous about the space you have at your disposal! Good luck with the move!

Lift up the table saw with one hand, hold the camera with the other hand and whilst doing that you can give advice and talk about assembling a shop? :P

hello Marc. I am also in the process of setting up a shop in a 3 car space. My wife and I just moved last month. I am pretty excited about it because my last house had a two car garage that I shared with my wife. So this is a space upgrade. I am not sure if you remember me, I was the one who bought your Jet 14″ band saw, so I was able to see your shop first hand (very impressive). I am very curious how you will be laying things out to acommodate your large inventory of equipment. Take it easy

I’m sure we’ll see it in a podcast sooner or later so it’s OK if you don’t have time to reply but I was just wondering how you are planning on transporting all that heavy equipment as I may have to do it myself in the near future. Thanks and good luck!

    Ron

Hope the shop move goes well. We just moved ourselves, hired movers (seriously, so worth every cent). Still ended up spending a day putting in new lights, plugs and switches. Add some drywall repairs and new paint, a few new plumbing fixtures…and suddenly a month has gone by and I haven’t even looked at my new shop space. I had a 115 square foot crawlspace, now I have 240 sq feet of full height basement…can’t wait!
