Mike’s Holiday Projects

I just finished up a couple of lamps for this year’s Christmas gift exchange. I made these lamps out of a chunk of slightly spalted maple that I salvaged out of the local tree “junk yard”. The finished is 5 coats of wipe-on poly with light sanding between each coat (while still in the lathe). I then drilled both lamps for the cords and assembled the hardware and covered the bases with tan felt. The lamps are about 16” tall (at top of the hardware) and about 6.5”-7.0” in diameter. It was a fairly simple weekend project.

We are doing a “White Elephant” type game with this year’s exchange. All of the gifts are placed under the tree, everyone picks a number and then gifts are chosen from under the tree in the order of the number that you chose. You can then choose to exchange gifts with the person that picks a present after you (2 times). We have never done this before, but we know families that have, and they have a great time.

Here’s how to add a subversive twist to the white elephant gift
game. Combine it with some kind of pot luck dinner where
everybody brings some food. Then, after the meal, sneak away
and wrap up somebody’s serving dish as one of the gifts. The
confusion that results will be quite amusing.
