Mahogany Crib – Viewer Project
This week’s project is submitted by Dale in California. Let’s see what he has to say:
“Hi Marc, here are some pictures of a crib I built for my first grandson. I am very new to woodworking and this was my first woodworking project ever. It was very ambitious but when I volunteered to make one I couldn’t back out. It was a lot of fun and I learned tons. It is made of African Mahogany, my wife picked the wood, I wanted oak but am glad we used mahogany. Everyone who sees it just loves it. Thought you might like it too. I am doing some remodeling to our house and I am doing all the trim work and am even thinking of building all the cabinets and even some furniture. Thanks, I really enjoy your website and have learned quite a bit from it.”

That is really good for a first project. I wish my first project turned out that well.
May I be the first to say that is a very nice looking crib. And I say this as a first parent of a now 1 year old that has looked at many a crib before purchasing one not half bad, but which doesn’t come close to what I see here.
Do yourself (your grandson and his parents, really) a favor and get a good quality organic matress. It will make a difference, especially as they get older.
very nice work. It will be great for you to watch the little one grow up knowing you made them a place to sleep.
VERY nice! Are the rails joined with Mortise & Tenon or a groove and plugs? (’dats a LOT o’ mortises!!!!)
Dale, that is a beautiful crib. I agree 100% that the mahogany was a much better choice than oak — you really don’t see many mahogany cribs. I hope you got some good kitchen passes out of that :-)
Thanks for all the kind comments. I am very proud of this project, believe me it won’t be the last. All of the joinery is mortise & tenon (glad I bought a machine). I think it will last for many years and hopefully many more grandchildren.
Thanks again
Great project Dale, congratulations!!
I guess the keyword here is grandson, I started one for my daughter and didn’t finish it in time. I guess I should carry on with the project so it will be finished before my grandsons are born. :-)
This is very nice. Keep up the good work.
This is an excellent project. I would like to build a crib for my nephew and have been looking for a design for some time.
I need an easy plan as I am only new to wood working and do not have many tools….a few chisels, a mitre saw, an electric sander, a couple of drills and a a drill press. I’d like to buy some more tools when I can afford it but for now these will make do.
There are some older designs out there but this one looks really nice. How can I get a copy of the plans for this crib?
