Lumberjocks/Wood Whisperer Safety Video Challenge

April 30, 2008 | Filed Under Blog

Once again we’ve teamed up with Lumberjocks.com for a great contest giveaway! Only this one is specifically for Woodworker’s Safety Week. Your task is to record your own woodworking safety video and post it on your personal LumberJocks Blog. The video can be anything regarding workshop safety, whether its personal tips, safety equipment or simply a list of do’s and dont’s. This is not just an chance to win a prize, its an opportunity to perhaps save a fellow woodworker from getting hurt. Speaking of prizes, three random winners will be selected to receive a Lumberjocks T-shirt, a Wood Whisperer T-shirt, and a copy of my new DVD, A Simple Varnish Finish. For all the details about the challenge, please visit Martin’s Blog over at Lumberjocks.com.

I had a near miss while using my tablesaw once. Part of the piece I was working on got pinched between the fence and the blade and the entire workpiece flew back and hit me in the abdomen. Luckily, I wasn’t seriosly hurt but it left quite a bruise. It’s scary to imagine what might have happened had it hit me in the face or neck.
I cancelled the project and instead hung the workpiece over my saw as a reminder of what can happen when not using every safety precaution available. A simple featherboard would have prevented this near catastrophe.
Put common sense at the top of yoour safety list. If it doesn’t feel right, STOP! I was lucky to get a second chance. Power tools rarely give them to you.

Since we’ve all (or many) have done dumb things, perhaps I should take consolation, but in fact, I was stupid. Perhaps this will prevent another from the same misstep.

I was trimming to size a small 2×4 block for a jig. I needed to remove just a hair (about 1/8″) from a nearly 4″ piece. Yeah, my instructions and common sense told me it was too small to cut on a compound miter saw, but I was already at the machine - with safety goggles, dust mask, and ear protection so I went ahead anyway. Bad move! As soon as the blade entered the wood, the piece twisted in my hand (No, I did not use a clamp) and kicked out at me (face) faster than a brush-back pitch from Clemens in his pre-pharmaceutical era. Part of the blade cover ripped off. A piece of the aluminum support fence ripped off. The blade ($80 Freud Diablo - my first expensive blade) ended up three teeth short. At least I was physically untouched. But Man, I was more scared than I’ve ever been while woodworking. This has translated to long term luck (more responsible woodworking) because even though it happened more than a year ago, I still keep the blade in sight in my shop as a constant reminder that an instant of stupidity can last an awfully long time.

Got something to say?
