LumberJocks Happenings

Its been a while since I mentioned LumberJocks. The community is getting bigger each day and continues to be a great resource for woodworkers around the world. They are currently running two new challenges:

Virtual Dining Table Challenge- The object is to use SketchUp to design a dining table. Participants will win prizes from Popular Woodworking and a Pro License form the Google SketchUp team is up for grabs.

Fall Philanthropy Challenge- A great idea for a good cause, “Save the Children”

So head on over to Lumberjocks and have some fun.

    I think the Fall Philanthropy Challenge is an awesome idea with the potential to really help a good cause. Looking at the list of things to do for a successful auction, I think we might have more success with a group effort. Maybe The Wood Whisperer (yourself), Wood Talk Online, Matt’s Basement Workshop, Neil from Furnitology, and Thomas J MacDonald from the Rough Cut Show would be willing to help with promoting an auction event. The reason I am suggesting this is the amount of exposure these podcasts bring to the event would be phenomenal. Then all of your fans would be able to combine their efforts and we could make a nice group donation. I would suggest the items auctioned be small. A one pound package delivered USPS Priority Mail costs $4.60 to ship; a flat rate box is $8.95. We could make some online fliers to post in social sites, blogs, and emails advertising the event. One thing I haven’t figured out is the venue for the auction. I have heard that EBay can be a challenge when it comes to listing charity auctions, but I haven’t had personal experience with that. Maybe someone has a better idea on a venue? What do you think?
