Low Back Chair - Project of the Week

May 3, 2008 | Filed Under Blog, Project of the Week

This week’s project comes from Jeff. He writes:

This is the chair that I just finished. All stock is 8/4 and this chair uses the “hip joint” we were speaking about. The finish is Waterlox and I put on 6 coats just by wiping it on. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Thanks Jeff. Great job. How did you go about doing the relief on the seat?It looks very uniform.

Jeff, this is a beautiful chair with great craftsmanship. I’m guessing it took a lot of manhours.

That’s a beautiful chair. Great job Jeff. I hope you don’t mind it I TRY to copy it. But I don’t think that I can come close to that good a job. If I get the courage to try, I will post the results. Thanks again for sharing.

Great job! The joints are tighter than the resolution on my monitor so I can’t see the “hip joints” you’re referring to. Could you describe them?

The arm detail is superlative. The grain curls nicely around and into the socket, the joint almost imperceptible as the eye flows downward.

I have to say that at first I found the black (ebony?) pins offputting, but as I look at the chair more I think it adds to the balance.

For such a young guy, you sure are talented.

I too must say that you did a really great job on this chair. The shape, the joints and the finish all come together beautifully. Again, great job.

I really like this chair. I am guessing that the seat was done with a router. I really love the way the from arm supports look like they “flow” from the seat. Again, really nice chair.

Got something to say?
