I have a question: my husband has a wood workshop but it isn’t organized. He just started the hobby recently, so he is still figuring things out and also shares his workshop with his best friend. So there isn’t much space and they haven’t had time to really fix the shop around where it works for both of them. My question is, I want to surprise my husband and have his shop organized. He is a hard working father that just doesn’t have time for himself to get out there and do it. So do you know of anyone near South Carolina that would be willing to do something like this, come out and fix his shop up (like a workshop consultant) and show him what he needs to make it a better working shop? I really really am in need of some help with this and would love to do it before Christmas. So any suggestions are greatly accepted, thanks!

    Mrs. Crane …

If I were you, I would buy Mr Crane a batch of storage containers (look in the background of various woodworking podcasts for ideas) and take the kids out for a long weekend day trip. Chances are your husband and his friend will have ideas about what they want to do, and just need the uninterrupted time to work. I’m a mom myself, and sometimes the best gift is time by yourself without the kids. [Which is why I've waited until my kids are older before doing any woodwork myself ... power tools and needy 3 year olds don't mix!]

If you really do want to hire someone, look for Professional Organizers and make some phone calls. Most won’t do workshops, but I bet some do.

  3. Hi Mrs. Crane. Liz has some excellent ideas. You also might want to try your local woodworking association. Its will be very helpful if the person doing the work has a working knowledge of the tools. Without it, the organization just might not make sense to a woodworker.

All that said, a workshop needs to be organized in a way that makes complete sense to the user. And each person is different. I know I personally would never want anyone organizing my shop for me. But that’s just. You certainly know your husband best. Good luck in your search.
