Live Shop Tour/ Q&A - Sunday 4 pm edt/1 pm pdt
May 3, 2007 | Filed Under Blog
So let’s make history together! On Sunday May 6th, we will have our first LIVE interactive Wood Whisperer Episode. There have been a lot of requests recently for a new shop tour, and I would be glad to provide one. Only this time, things will be a little different. As we walk around the shop, you will have the opportunity to ask questions via the chat module provided by Ustream.tv. Incredible!
So on Sunday at 4 pm eastern/ 1 pm pacific, go to http://ustream.tv/channel/the-wood-whisperer. There, you will see the live streaming video and the chat box. The first time I went there it told me to download the latest Java by following the supplied link. I did this and everything turned out great. The chat works flawlessly now. My computer also popped up a dialog box requesting certificate approval. The chat wouldn’t work unless I did this. Now if you haven’t signed up for a free account with Ustream.tv, that’s ok. The chat will log you in automatically as “Guestxxx”. Feel free to type in your questions and I will try to answer as many as I can. Go ahead and ask anything about the shop, my tools, my life, etc… Lets have fun with it. And lets hope the website is working on Sunday. And if you prefer to simply watch, you can still see the action on our Webcam Page.
Oh and it might not be a bad idea for you to go to Ustream.tv ahead of time and check out some of the other streaming videos so that you can get your Java up to date. So lets just call this a little experiment. And who knows, we just may do some live demos periodically if things go well. We will also be recording the event and posting it as a regular podcast so don’t worry if you miss it. Thanks everyone! See you Sunday!

Got something to say?

Hell I would watch and ask questions.
That sounds really interesting. Also, another idea is to use the real time streaming to explore new tools. You could do a demo in real time with questions and suggestions on the fly while demonstrating new things like the new Festool Domino.
Absolutely! Sounds like a great event
Live podcast would really be cool. I would be disappointed if I miss it.
I would be very interested. When’s the show begin????
Great idea Marc. Mid-afternoon your time would be great if possible as it would allow us here in Aus to watch.
I am interested in this. Just hope I remember to tune in.
count me in
I’m not able to see anything yet, is there a schedule? Or are these archived away somewhere to view later?
Sunday afternoon would definitely be the timeframe. I will announce an official time tonight.
Hey mike, I have been messing with the connection off and on today so that might be why you haven’t seen anything. But it has been up for the majority of the day. I am trying to find out if we can get away with the wireless connection on Sunday.
Can you guys tell me if the audio is smooth or choppy for you?
Oh and dont worry. We plan on recording the live version and releasing it as a podcast later. So if you miss something, you will still be able to catch it later.
WOW this is so cool…we get to actually watch you work now lol. I have been hearing the sound pretty good, every once and a while there is a little pause but it doesn’t last long. At least that what i’m hearing.
keep up the good work!
P.S. when is the next podcast comming out?
Sounds like a great ideal but definitely not a replacement for the podcasts. I think you still need the podcasts for projects, but the streaming video would be great for how to items such as sharpening, saw tuning, etc.
Is there anyway to record the live session and post it as a podcasts and offer it for download to those who couldn’t watch during that time?
That sounds like a great idea.I will tune in and ask some questions, and by the way I really enjoy your web site and podcasts.Keep up the good work Mark.
Marc,
On the audio the sound can be somewhat choppy but I think that coincides with the minor blips in the streaming…overall what I saw was consistently pretty smooth.
I would love to see this happen. Live demo would be excellent… thanks for everything.
The audio is at times choppy here too, I also believe it is related to the stream being interrupted occasionally. It’s not unbearable. I need to check other ustreams to see if i experience the same thing.
On the day of the live show, I will make sure my wireless modem is closer to the shop so that we can at least rule out my upload speed as the culprit. I tested it this afternoon and the stream was only interrupted every 15 secs or so.
Talking about shop tours check this out!

Oh and Marc, This is one of your best ideas yet!
lol. good find! You see, I know how it is to work in a small garage. :)
Hello there, I might be interested, when do the chat start?
I’m in!!! Got the reminder set on the crackberry, won’t miss it for sure! Keep up the great work Marc!
I wouldn’t mind seeing the chat screen more often.
thanks for the live stream tour today!
CRAP! i think i missed the shop tour, the freakin time zones messed me up. Will this show ever be online for me to watch again?
Marc,
That was a lot of fun. Even with the couple of technical challenges in the beginning, it was a new beginning for on-line woodworking. I also love that it was a family affair, with your wife a mom. It’s great they can have a role in your passion. I’ll be looking forward to the next life web-cast.
Mike
Thanks Marc that was the best time online in a long time. The best part of the show was when I got you hopping on one foot. You were doing everything the veiwers were asking so…. I asked and your Mom delivered! Thanks Mom!
Looking forward to the next one, I’m sure you will be wiser, experianced and more comfortable with our antics the next time! Cheers to our woodworking astronaut - Marc “Buzz” Spagnuolo.
what a treat! Thanks to you, Nicole, and your Mom on a job well done. to be able to bounce questions off of you in real time was extrordinary. It was a huge success and I hope you do more of these in the future. I can’t wait to download the taped version and watch it over again…
What no clip so everyone can see the new shop?
hey Marc, Nicole and of course MOM. good seeing you today, I missed the first hour or so, went to the Pomona show. Not much going on there, but it was still a bit of fun.
I am very happy for you, glad your dream is coming true.
I am so proud of Nicole, too. She is a real trooper in supporting you and holding that camera all the time. she is doing great. can’t wait to see the whole thing.
take care guys
Hi Mark,
Really enjoy the show ; great adventure.
But, and you know there’s always a but…for me the sound was of very poor quality. Not so far for the ocasional interruption but for the echo.
You have a big shop and lot of echo. There must be a way to have a mike that would be more directional. It was very hard to hear what you were talking about and worse when couple people were talking at the same time.
I haven
After the live Q&A was over, I quickly realized what was wrong with the audio. The echo was simply due to the fact that my laptop mic was picking up all the sound, instead of my lapelle mic. That will be much improved next time. Remember, this was just an experiment. So the fact that we even had video and audio streaming to almost 100 people was a friggin’ miracle. Thanks everyone for showing up and participating!
So Marc,
I was unable to see the live podcast of your shop so I went to Ustream to look for it but it is not there. Can I view it somewhere?
Joe
