Kitchen Cabinets - Project of the Week

February 9, 2008 | Filed Under Blog, Project of the Week

This week’s project comes from Skip. Beautiful birch kitchen cabinets. Norm eat your heart out! Here’s Skip’s description:

“Pictures show my biggest home project. Floor is Cherry. Cabinets are Birch, finished with a 7 step process including conditioning, 3 gel stain combos-Minwax and Old Masters, then wipe-on-poly top coats. Drawers and lower china cabinet all have full extension slides. Granite was contracted. The stained glass was my first attempt, but worth the effort. Good note – when I decided to design and make the stained glass, I visited a local supplier/window maker and he said I could ask questions, watch him work and get some pointers… for a reasonable time – but asked if I decided to make a window, to please purchase supplies and material from him. A great trade off!”

Very nice. I like the choice of pulls; good contemporary look. The stained/leaded glass is a nice touch. Good call on the larger double panel doors as well. I might have considered some small crown molding to dress up the ceiling line.

Congratulations on a fine looking kitchen. Hopefully the food tastes as good as the cabinets look!

I agree with William a crown would really set that kitchen off, other wise very nice!

Actually i just took another look at pics! I change my mind about the crown. Your top fronts on the bases are smaller than normal leaving a nice reveal there. I figure you carried that idea to the uppers to bring it all together! In which case a crown isn’t needed!

What’s really amazing is that your ceiling is as flat as it is! With my plaster ceilings, I need at least some kind of molding to cover the gaps.

I also like the simple grooved stiles and rails. The lines are really clean and simple.

Great looking cabinets! I built my own about a year ago. I used cypress. This can be a very rewarding project not to mention saving a TON of cash. I had mine quoted before I decided to build. I figured I saved myself about 7 grand doing it myself!

They look great. How did you fix the display cabinet to the wall?

    Muiris.

Awesome! I especially like the stained glass display. I got into it a few years ago and it can be very rewarding to turn out a piece like that!

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

Muiris - there are cleats at the top and bottom of the cabinet. Screws (3.5″) were driven into the studs, and countersunk holes plugged. It worked well for me.

I’m impressed. Can’t improve on perfection!

Got something to say?
