HOLY SMOKES!!
Wow, what a day Nicole and I have had! This forced server change literally took up the entire day, since 8am this morning. Its now 12:30am and we are finally shutting down with the site mostly functional. The Guild site is tomorrow’s challenge. As many folks predicted, we couldn’t count on GoDaddy when we needed them most. So it was time for a change in service providers. Thank you to everyone for their recommendations. The company we felt would give us the best service was MediaTemple. Within an hour, MediaTemple helped us get this site back up and running without a hitch (at Midnight on a Friday).
So I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but at least the dust is clearing and things are getting back in order. Thanks everyone for your patience. Time to crash!

Holy smokes indeed! I didn’t expect this, but the site is actually noticeably faster. A lot faster.
Overloaded servers and their networks slow to a snail’s pace very quickly…
Wow, GoDaddy not come through?! I’m so surprised that I’m beside myself saying “I’m so surprised”. Not.
Glad you got a real company.
Ah, hey, cool, this comment qualifies me to maybe win a prize! :)
Thanks for all the hard work, guys. Good luck with the rest of the transition.
Just another reason I’m glad I left the IT world. Glad you got the site migrated as easily as you did.
Sorry you had so much trouble getting your website back up but I am glad it is now up and running. I spend way to much time on your site and miss it when it is gone.
I was in software development for over 15 years and I know how nerve racking it can be when things go wrong. The most important thing I learned was backup everything as often as you can and test your backup strategy.
Boy, talk about a poor choice of words! Hopefully not time to crash!:)
Well said!
Great work – I don’t know about the rest but it is really appreciated. Being new to woodworking your site keeps me excited and showes new ideas and ways of doing things. Thanks..
Well, I guess there’s some much needed R&R coming up for Marc and Nicole. I did notice during the problem period, that the TWW Community site continued to run well. Is the Community site on a different server?
Yup, the community site is a Ning site, which is hosted on a completely different server.
Congratulations!!! It seems to be running like a dream!
Thank you both
Thanks everyone. Feeling good about everything today. Guild site is back up, password protection is on, and only thing left is our ad server. Very glad to hear the site is running faster too. You get what you pay for in this industry!
Your site is one of those things that I have come to take for granted as always being there for me…..until I checked in at lunchtime on Friday when it was down. Thank you both for getting it back up and running again so quickly.
Great work. You two really are geeks at heart, aren’t you??!! LOL
Glad you guys moved over :). MediaTemple has really good service. You’ll be really pleased with them!
I gotta agree. The site is loading faster! It’s amazing how fast they were able to respond to the move! Great to have the site back up and running!
MediaTemple is a BIG step up in the world. Enjoy it!
Hey I just reloaded this page and zip boom bang it’s here.
Thanks for all your hard work! I really missed the site while it was down!
What do I say to anyone who had to endure a lengthy but ultimately successful “maintenance window”… good job and go get some sleep!
MediaTemple… will have to remember them if I should need any hosting down the road.
Well all of this is Greek to me as far as the IT stuff, but way to go once again you two. You guys should get some Super IT capes and wear in celebration-kinda like busting a bottle on a new ship on the maden sail!! All the dedication and teamwork you both do I hope seems worth it at the end of the day because it is greatly appreciated. Does the big upgrade come with a big price tag for you as well?? I hope not. Thanks again for all you guys do for us and go get some sleep.
Nate
Well it is definitely more expensive, but worth every penny. We were got by on very cheap hosting for the past three years. Given the growth of the site and the fact that this is my primary business now, its certainly worth investing in and we look forward to working with a host that can actually help us when we need it.
Excellent work guys, I hope you won’t have to go through all this again.
Now let’s get some rest… and do some WW :-)
Christian
Well, actually down the road they will have to upgrade but with a decent provider who will monitor their bandwidth growth they won’t have to “go through it” again. If it was done right when upgrades happen there should be redundant servers in place to take the load and it should be unnoticed by users… er, clients…
At least Marc is getting what he is paying for….service.
Thanks for the dedication to your site. You keep me motivated to get in the shop!
I saw my first Wood Whisperer show yesterday on a totally random public broadcast station here in Portland, OR…I am an instant fan! The program was about adjusting your table saw and I watched every damn minute of it and I don’t even have a table saw.
Thanks for the fun programs and website, I look forward to exploring it!
Ok now that’s cool! I know we have some of our shows available on public access but I never really know just how many people see it. Glad to have you here DrillBitSally!
Hey by the way – what public channel did you catch TWW on? I’m curious because I to live in Portland, Or.
This is the downloading station for Portland: http://www.pcmtv.org/
I am glad to see that the site is back up. I shed a small tear the other day when I could not access the site, but I was not worried since you had made the announcement about the switch. I just hope that there is internet in heaven, so that when I die I can still access the loads of info that you have to offer.
Great to see you back up again. You both deserve a good rest for all the hard work. Sounds like if you get tired of woodworking you could get a job in IT (LOL). Keep up the good work, your site is the best.
The site is noticeably faster to load and log into. Great response too.
I hope this new ISP keeps you as their client by avoiding the motto:
“We’re not happy until you’re not happy!”….
GoDaddy really goofed by letting you folks down at a critical moment on such a public forum. Hold these new guys to their service level agreements.
Bonne chance(good luck) from Canada.
Loads seem much, much faster.
I appreciate the change.
Hi Marc,
You made the right choice with MediaTemple. They’re support service is the best I’ve seen and the servers are fast and reliable.
Also, the account center is one of the best I’ve seen.
Take care,
Luis
