In some respects, I just never grew up. :) Alder is actually a pretty good furniture wood. Its not as dense or as durable as I usually prefer, but it can be made to look like more expensive woods quite easily. When I was making custom pieces for folks in this area, alder was the #1 requested wood. But the reason for its popularity is that it looks decent on its one, its incredibly cheap at only a couple bucks a board foot and can be made to look like maple, cherry, or walnut with just a little stain.
