Doug From Canada – Shop Tour

This week’s Shop of the Week comes from Doug up in Canada. Here’s what he had to say:

Here is my shop, not as elaborate as some, but it is a work in progress. It is a 16 x 24 garage converted to a work shop. When we bought the house, the garage was bare studded walls. We installed all new wiring and fuse panel insulated and drywalled it all in approximately 2 weeks. It has a natural gas furnace to keep the glue, and my butt from freezing in the winter, and air conditioning to keep me cool in the summer. For machines, I have a General 15″ planer , King 6″ jointer, King 14″ band saw, a Delta table saw, and a King dust collector with various other power and hand tools to keep me entertained. All machines are on wheels so I can keep them out of the way when not in use. I have only been into wood working for a couple of years, and am loving every minute of it. I have been taking a cabinet makers course at a local college, and have designed and built a couple of my own projects. Check out the nice little project I just finished for my very lovely wife on the work bench. Thanks for that one..:) Thanks for all the tips, and keep the laughs coming…

*sigh* I’ll keep on dreaming of having that much space.

Nice shop though! Love that project on your bench – where oh where did you come up with it? :o)

    Nice Doug,

Wow! Two weeks! A buddy and I have been working on my shop for the last three years and not completely finished. I’m hoping this week I can finally start making cabinets. I can’t wait to be done with the construction so I can start actual woodworking!!!

    Nice shop Doug
I like your dust colletion system for the small tools.
I am shamefully stealing all the good ideas I see as I am now officially started on building my shop with a house attached.
I will post pics when it is operational

I see what looks like a homemade air cleaner hanging from the ceiling. How well does it work and how did you make it? I’ve been considering building one myself.

  7. Craig says:

That sure is a “beefy” miter gauge..is that the Jessem? I’ve seen pics of it in catalogs, but it never realized it was so big. I have the incra, and I’m pretty pleased with it but that one you have sure does look like a fine quality instrument!

Nice work on the shop..the previous post said; “keep buying” so true, so very true!!

Is that the Delta “Hybrid” table saw? if so, how do you like it?
    1 1/2 HP on 110?

You have made a great start on some nice power tools. I envy your large space too. I think we all get some good ideas from each other when looking at shop pictures.

Thanks for all the comments guys..

Dan, The air cleaner works great.. I found a 110v squirrel type blower motor in a catalog, and mounted it in the front of the box. It draws the air in from both sides of the unit. I bought filters (12″x24″x1″ ) and then built the box to fit them. The sides of the box, are the filters.. There are actually two filters deep on each side, ( 2 inches ) and when the outside one gets dirty, I put a new one on the inside, and move the current inside one, to the out side. Thrifty.. cheap.. you decide.. I actually vacum the filter off a couple times before changing it out.. okay.. okay.. I am cheap..

Craig.. yes that is a Jessem .. I have not used it a lot.. nor did I know much about them.. but.. it was a gift from my wife when I was buying the saw.. so I grabbed it right.. :) ( I tried steering her to the drum sander.. but.. ) .. it seems to keep its acuracy after initial setup, and works well on the table. It is bulky, and requires a sturdy bracket to hang it up, but I am happy with it.. As far as the saw.. it is a hybrid… and so far I am impressed with it…. right out of the box it required very little as far as adjustments to set it up.. the table is nice and flat, and the power is okay as long as you are not forcing hard wood through it at a crazy pace…. after all it is only 110.. I got it for approx. $500.00 off the sticker price with the sale price at the time, plus an added mail in rebate… so it was an economical or cheap .. step up to a lot better saw than I had… that I just could not pass on. All in all, I have been very happy with it. I use a Woodworker II blade on it.. and it is still singing.. that wonderful song… :)

    Have fun..

    Doug

Great job with the space you have. I have a similar situation to you. I am in the process of drawing up plans to make a rolling station like yours. I was going to make mine a double width though so I could eliminate some of the wall cabinets. Unlike you I am sharing my space with 2 kids and the bikes and toys. What type of castors did you use and is there anything you would do different if you had to remake?

    cheers
