Dennis’ Chess Set

Dennis from Missouri has submitted this stunning chess board set. Love me some purple heart! Let’s check it out:

Marc, just want to say that I have enjoyed your website and all of the tips and ideas. I wanted to submit a few photos of a chess set I have been working on from some scrap wood I had around my small two car garage shop. The board is made of Cherry and Walnut, trimmed with Pecan. I have an inlay of purple heart around the board and is also trimmed with the same. When I started this project, it was just going to be a board. As I went along, I started getting a few more ideas and decided, what the heck, create an entire set. Hope everyone enjoys the pictures. Thanks and again, Good Luck and keep up the great work!

Looks great. Love it when “scrap” wood turns into something wonderful! Also, like that all your grain is going the same direction on the playing field. Seen quite a few boards tear themselves apart because that wasn’t done. Great job! How long have you been working in wood?

I like the look of the purpleheart as bold corners and trim along with the strong look of the drawer pulls. The unique look of every third row rotating sapwood and heartwood is also eyecatching. Nice job and have fun playing chess.

I really like the storage drawer. Are the dividers walnut also? The purple heart really makes the set as well as providing a frame and visual support for all else.

Love the shine on the top of that. Awesome!

    Absolutely beautiful work!

Great use of “scrape wood” and I really like the divided storage. I’m sure you will have years of fun using this Chess Board.

This is the best chess set I have ever seen. What are the Pieces made from?

  8. Conny says:

Absolutely stunning. But i do find it amusing when you say a “small” two door garage shop, is that really small? My shop is 10 square meters, that’s small. ;)

    Happy new year from Sweden.
