David Marks Signature Easy Rougher
David Marks recently announced the release of a signature turning tool: his version of the Ci1 Easy Rougher. If you aren’t familiar, the Easy Rougher is a very cool tool. Its a roughing gouge that features a 4-sided replaceable carbide cutterhead. So that means the cutting edge stays sharp for an incredibly long time. Once its dull, turn it 90 degrees. After all four sides are dull, simply replace the tip for about $14. That sure is better than hundreds of trips to the grinder! David’s signature version of this tool features a longer bubinga handle, and of course, David’s signature.
Check out the Easy Rougher site to learn more about the tool and head on over to David’s site to find out more about his Signature version.

Is it really a roughing gouge or is it a roughing scraper?
Yeah I guess it would be more accurate to call it a very aggressive roughing scraper.
O.K. a little help here – I have been turning for years and “Know” that you “Can’t turn wood with carbide. Clarification: you can’t turn wood as well with carbide as with high sped steel since the edge of carbide is not as sharp as you can sharpen / hone HSS.
Can you tell me what make this different?
The videos seem to prove otherwise…
Check out their FAQ. They address the issue of carbide.
