Chuck in AZ – Shop Tour

This week’s shop comes from Chuck in Chandler, AZ. He writes:

Here are a few pics of my garage shop as it is every day. We have a three car garage and the third space is all mine and, as you can see, I use every inch. The tall rack by the jointer holds my chop saw, oscillating spindle sander, planer and scrollsaw. All are mounted on plywood bases that I just slide in and out as needed. The rack is an old bakery cooling rack from a grocery store that I repaired after finding it by a dumpster and is probably the most useful thing I have in my shop.

Wow. I think I saw Jimmy Hoffa’s body in there somewhere. That’s a lot of stuff in a small space.

  2. Claude Stewart says:

Wow I would say It’s time to ditch the cars. Claude

  3. Craig says:

Great idea with the bread racks!

I’ve seen those behind grocery stores before and have imagined that they would be useful in a shop. I’m surprised that Rockler doesn’t sell a similar rack.

    Thanks for sharing your pics!

  4. I especially liked the Jack Daniels tin. Contents work as a space heater in winter (if we ever have them here in Chandler…)

ChrisH, Jimmy Hoffa’s body is inside the air compressor…

  5. Simon Girouard says:

I like the way you put the sharpening station upside down with a hinge and flip it over when you need it.

  6. Mike says:

Hey Chuck, if you’re reading this… how do you like the Rigid jointer?

  7. Chuck says:

    Mike,

The Rigid jointer is the best purchase I have made so far and I use it on nearly every project. It is extremely reliable and solid with very easy adjustments and good 4″ dust collection. My woodworking went to another level when I started using it. I tested a few and came to the conclusion that you shouldn’t skimp on a jointer as I have found it invaluable in the shop.

  8. Les says:

    You prove the old adage: Where’s there’s a will, there’s a way.

    Nice job.

  9. Mike says:

Chuck – Nice shop! My shop is very similar – right down to the magnetic trays stuck to the side of the tool box! The only thing in mine that you don’t have is a washer & dryer. I cover them with a temporary wood top to give me added table space.

I’ve got the Rigid Jointer as well. It works well enough, but if I could do over I would have got at least a Grizzley for a couple hundred more.

I’ve learned the hard that I should buy my second tool first! I will no doubt upgrade to an 8″ soon. $350 plus $600 equals $950, OUCH! could have had a Powermatic!!

  11. Vic says:

Great way to work the space, Chuck. Craig, before you settle on an
8″ jointer, consider the smallest planer you can get is a 12″. When I upgrade from a 6″ jointer, I’m thinking seriously about getting the new
    Grizzly 12″ http://www.grizzly.com/product.....ead/G0609X

  12. Frank says:

When it comes to having cars in the garage, I can only relate. My 2007 truck stays outside, but her car can’t go out there – it might be dirty. :o)

  13. Frank says:

How are you keeping the shop cool?

  14. Chuck says:

    Frank,

I’ve been looking into garage air-conditioners and insulating the walls, but right now I only have a couple of fans that blow directly on the work space and most of the summer the temp is around 110-115. (I did insulate the garage doors which brought the temp down from 120ish.) Winter is beautiful here with temps in the garage ranging from 50 to 80. Right now I’m trying to decide between a new bandsaw and the air-conditioner.
