Black Walnut Chair – Viewer Project

I have the highest respect for chair makers. Its such a great combination of form and function and its a great test of a woodworker’s abilities in both design and construction. Let’s check out this beautiful chair built by Cameron in North Carolina:

Just finished a chair project I have been working on for the last few weeks. Here are the results. The wood is American Black Walnut. I used loose tenon joinery throughout the chair. I had access to a milling machine so I used it to experiment with cutting a few of the mortises. It worked extremely well and will make it difficult to go back to the router! The back was formed in the vacuum press with 1/16″ walnut veneer I got from Veneersupplies.com per your suggestion on video #17 A Pressing Matter. The finish is an oil/varnish mixture. Thanks for the site. It is a tremendous resource for woodworkers of all skill levels.

wowowow Cameron that’s just stunning! Well done indeed. I have a bit of a fetish for chairs. Have a look on the on the wood whisperer community for my blog post on modern furniture that features a rather nice sculptural chair by David Savage.

One of my buddies has a Mill in his shop and I give him a lot of *&%#. I tell hims that he is really a machinist, masquerading as a woodworker :-).

Really like the chair. It looks like it is very comfortable and relaxing. Not a snobbish stuffy chair.
    great job.

  11. Walter Wolf says:

sorry, I didn’t realise you already said it.

Beautiful chair! I think building a chair is the ultimate woodworking project. They are typically very light in their construction, yet have to withstand incredible stresses. They also have to be comfortable, sized correctly and look good. I can think of no other woodworking project that requires such lofty requirements. Just as a finish carpenter’s badge is his staircase, I think the chair is the ultimate culmination of skills for a woodworker. Someday I hope to enter these honored ranks with my own chair…

I really like. Any more info…. is this posted elsewhere like lumberjocks?
