AWFS 2009 Plans

Its that time of year again! Woodworkers from across the globe will soon convene in the middle of the desert for the AWFS Fair. I just wanted to let everyone know that we will be covering the event, once again, with video, blog posts, Tweets, live video, and even quick video clips uploaded from my iPhone directly to YouTube!
Adding to the excitement this year is the appearance of Matt Vanderlist! You guys know him right? My cohort on Wood Talk Online and the shining star and creator of Matt’s Basement Workshop. Matt and I have known each other for about 3 years now and we’ve never met in person. So this should be interesting.
Now if you happen to be at the show this year, we are planning a lunchtime meetup for Friday the 17th at 11am in the main lobby. We can decide at that time where we want to eat. Maybe a big buffet? Matt is bringing his stretchy pants so we are good to go.
We plan on being there for the first three days of the show and our home base will be the Powermatic Booth #5629. So if we aren’t at the booth, we are roaming the floor. But make sure you find us, because Nicole will have lots of goodies (like t-shirts and travel mugs) for Wood Whisperer fans who track us down. And anyone seen wearing a Wood Whisperer or Schwarz t-shirt will be given a free 3-month membership to The Wood Whisperer Guild and we will put you into one of our videos from the show! If you’re already a Guild member we’ll just add 3 months to your membership! Hope to see you there!

sounds like a hoot. its moments like this I wish I lived any closer to vegas.
Sounds real ‘citin. Could you sign the top of my kids heads for a souvaneer?
Only if I can use a super permanent industrial Sharpie. :)
Make sure you stop by the ShopBot Tools Booth 8845. Look forward to meeting you and Nichole.
Thanks to a very unexpected OK from the Mrs. I have just booked my flight and hotel and will be there, sporting my TWW t-shirt.
Had a thought… it would obviously be very low-tech, like Garage Band or Audacity on a laptop low-tech, but what would be the possibility of a live, or not live, Wood Talk Online from the AWFS, maybe an informal roundtable thingie with the Whisperer fans who can make it. Seems like a shame to miss out on an opportunity to do a WTO with you and Matt in the same room.
We do plan on doing some kind of WTO recording, but I am not sure how the whole audience thing would work. Recording is one thing, but amplifying our voices so people can actually hear us is a whole other ball of wax.
But I like the idea of a WTO with guests. Let me think on it. I am sure we’ll come up with something cool! Wanna be our first guest?
Sure! Could talk about being a woodworking student, or do a post-safety week follow up on all of my ridiculous woodworking injuries.
So am I right that the coverage will be on the lines of what you did in 07?? If so I think it would be cool that along with the show footage if you filmed a little bit of the meeting up with the site members before you all head out to lunch, for those us of that can’t be there it would be nice if you could give us a feeling of how a Woodwhisperer-Matt’s Basement fan base gathering can be like. I, as with most of us, really wish I could be there-but for all of you that are going I hope it is the time of your lives and have safe traveling’s. One other thought is some of the others of you that are able to go, if you film it as well maybe there could be a “best of” collaboration video posted on here. Just a couple of thoughts, along with an interrogation of Norm to see if we are going to get a season 22. Have fun all of you.
Nate
I did plan on getting some footage of the events when possible. So you can expect some of that this year too. Great idea!
Awwww, sucks to be broke!!!
I’m going to try to get Norm to autograph my brad nailer. They will let me bring that on the plane right?
I don’t think Norm is going to be there this year. At least I didn’t his name, or David Marks, listed anywhere on aything related to the event.
marc we and my wife were coming over from the uk to take a holiday and visit the convention due to ill health not able to make it can you cover a much as possible on the festool stall if there or any new tools due for relaese hope you all enjoy as i now you will hope to see you all next year
For serious chow hounds, I recommend the buffet at the Paris Casino. You can ride there directly from the Hilton via Monorail. The food at the Paris buffet is a few notches up the typical, dorm food quality. And the dessert bar is the size of an ocean-going yacht!
I’ve heard great things about the buffet at the Rio. But it’s off the Strip. You’d have to drive over there or take a cab. And the traffic on and around the Strip can be a nightmare.
I’ve tried the buffets at Mirage and Luxor. They were just OK.
The “Kahunaville” restaurant at Treasure Island has an amazing Cuban Grilled Sandwich. That restaurant is kinda cool and very reasonably priced. The Mexican restaurant there, “Isla” is also very good, but it’s not open for lunch. The food at Isla is moderately priced, but be careful if you order a Margarita. Some of them are over a $100!
DOH!
Sorry work has me tied up!
Super cheap flights from Billings – killing me!
Would love to meet you and Matt sometime.
…and Nicole!
David Marks won’t be there. He is filming his new DVD that weekend. I wish I was going to be there, but I will be on vacation with my wife in Lake Tahoe. When I tried to tell her that it was only 400 miles away, she then told me, well, I don’t think I can repeat what she told me. Anyway, I wish I was going to be there. You guys have fun.
